Fees, finance and scholarships

We know that financial issues are an important part of your decision about where to study. That is why we offer all our students flexible payment plans without any hidden administrative costs.

Living costs

  • We generally advise that you have sufficient funds to cover your tuition fees, plus at least £12,000-£13,000 to cover living costs for one calendar year – this should be enough to cover accommodation, food, local travel, and a 'modest' social life. Use the free international student calculator to work out how to manage your money and build a budget for living and studying in the UK.

Birkbeck offers some scholarships specifically for international students. See following for details.

2016 Santander Scholarships (for students from Latin America)

  • Birkbeck is pleased to offer various £5000 scholarships to students from Latin America who will be studying at either undergraduate or postgraduate level at Birkbeck during the 2016-2017 academic year.
  • To apply for the scholarship, students must first submit an online application through the course web page. After receiving an unconditional offer, applicants must submit an essay of no more than 500 words to international-office@bbk.ac.uk with the subject line 'Santander Scholarship Application' answering the following question:
    • Why are you the ideal candidate to receive the £5,000 Santander scholarship?
  • Scholarship recipients will be chosen based on academic promise, the essay, the personal statement submitted with the course application, and need. The £5,000 scholarship will be applied towards course tuition fees. Students must apply before 1 June 2016.

Birkbeck International Merit Scholarship (Thailand, Vietnam and India)

  • Birkbeck is offering a limited number of merit scholarships to suitably qualified students from Thailand, Vietnam and India who accept offers to do Master’s degree programmes at Birkbeck, University of London, starting in September 2016.
  • Who may apply: Students accepted onto one-year taught Master’s degrees at Birkbeck, University of London, starting in September 2016
  • Amount: £4000 paid as a contribution towards tuition fees
  • Criteria:
    • Thailand: applicants must be Thai citizens and achieve a minimum final GPA of 2.8 in their Bachelor's Degree from a recognised Thai university. To be eligible, applicants should secure an offer (conditional or unconditional) to study on a Master's Degree programme from Birkbeck, University of London by 24th May 2016.
    • Vietnam: applicants must be Vietnamese citizens and achieve a minimum final grade of 7.0 (GPA 2.8) in their Bachelor's degree (Bang Tot Nghiep Dai Hoc) from a recognised Vietnamese university. To be eligible, applicants should secure an offer (conditional or unconditional) to study on a Master's Degree programme from Birkbeck, University of London by 24th May 2016.
    • India: applicants must be Indian citizens with a Bachelor's degree from a recognised Indian university with a final grade of 70% or higher (applicants from top universities in India may apply with a final grade of less than 70%). To be eligible, applicants should secure an offer (conditional or unconditional) to study on a Master's degree programme from Birkbeck, University of London by 15 June 2016.
  • General: Scholarships may not be held in conjunction with any other Birkbeck-funded/supported scholarship (e.g. Chevening) or where the fees are fully funded by other sources.
  • How to apply: Once you have received an offer from Birkbeck, you must submit an essay of no more than 500 words to international-office@bbk.ac.uk. The essay should detail why you are the ideal candidate to receive the International Merit Scholarship. Recipients will be chosen based on a combination of academic merit and financial need.

  • Birkbeck is pleased to offer the following scholarships to students from Africa who will be studying at either undergraduate or postgraduate level at Birkbeck during the 2016-2017 academic year:
    • 1 £10,000 scholarship
    • 1 £5,000 scholarship
    • 1 £3,000 scholarship
    • 1 £2,000 scholarship
  • To apply for the scholarship, students must first submit an online application through the course web page.
