Partnerships with other academic institutions

We are proud to have a number of strategically important partnerships with some of the world’s leading universities.

Africa

Ghana: University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA)

  • Birkbeck signed a collaboration agreement to enable eligible academic staff from UPSA to enrol into Birkbeck's PhD programmes to study largely on an online, distance learning basis. 
  • The agreement covers MPhil/PhD programmes in Management, Law, and Film and Screen Media, which enrolled UPSA staff members can study remotely from their Accra base. 

Asia

China: Beijing Forestry University (BJFU)

  • Birkbeck’s School of Creative Arts, Culture and Communication has a successful Chinese collaboration with the School of Foreign Languages at Beijing Forestry University, a proud member of China’s Project 211 (top 100 Chinese universities in the 21st century), well known for its environmental policies.
  • The partnership involves visiting students taking modules and programmes in applied linguistics. This collaboration also includes a reciprocal staff and research exchange.

China: South Western University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE)

  • SWUFE is the training base for political and economic talent in Southwest China and is one of the leading institutions for economics and finance education in China. The School of International Business (SIB) is an important business school, with its own unique characteristics in Southwestern China, and has established a wide range of collaboration with more than 10 European and American universities.
  • To promote comprehensive and sustainable development in western China, SIB has collaborated with Birkbeck through the School of Business, Economics and Informatics and in particular with the Department of Management. It uses SIB’s Executive Development Programme (EDP) Centre as the platform to provide top-level training course in Western China, and the collaborative initiative allows for the delivery of Master's/MPhil programmes to students from SWUFE-SIB and staff exchanges.
  • The partnership offers a range of benefits to students and staff at both universities, including:
    • a visiting staff programme
    • a dual degree, where up to 15 selected students from SWUFE will come to London to study at Birkbeck-SBEI for the second year of their SWUFE-SIB Master's Degree (during which time they will complete one of the Master's Degree programmes in the Department of Management)
    • an undergraduate progression has been established, and up to 15 selected undergraduates who have completed the SWUFE-SIB Bachelor’s degree and who meet Birkbeck’s entry criteria will be invited to progress onto one of Birkbeck-SBEI taught postgraduate programmes in London
    • a joint university collaboration on PhD programmes.

Japan: Ochanomizu University, Tokyo

  • Japan's first higher education institution for women, established in 1875, offers semester and year-long exchanges for women at Birkbeck and summer school programmes for both men and women. Students at Ochanomizu can visit Birkbeck for a semester or full year of undergraduate study.

JAPAN: HOSEI UNIVERSITY

  • As part of a student exchange arrangement organised by the School of Creative Arts, Culture and Communication, students from Birkbeck can spend either six months or one academic year studying at Hosei University. 
  • Students from Hosei University can spend either six months or one academic year studying at Birkbeck.

JAPAN: INTERNATIONAL CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY (ICU) 

  • As part of a student exchange arrangement organised by the School of Creative Arts, Culture and Communication, students from Birkbeck can spend one academic year studying at ICU.
  • Students from ICU can spend one academic year studying at Birkbeck.

Europe and UK

Exchange and Study ABroad

France: Aix-Marseille Université

  • Birkbeck’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences has a collaboration with the Aix-Marseille Université, which covers research co-operation, joint organisation of research events, and delivery of training for research students.

France: Université Catholique de Lyon

  • The School of Creative Arts, Culture and Communication has an agreement with the Université Catholique de Lyon that allows language students to study at a summer school in Lyon at a reduced rate.

Italy: University of Milano-Bicocca

  • The University of Milano-Bicocca (UNIMIB) is a renowned public university located in Milan, Italy.
  • Students from UNIMIB are able to come to Birkbeck and study at the Department of Economics, Mathematics and Statistics and, in two years, earn a Double Master's Degree in MSc Quantitative Risk Management with Machine Learning and a Laurea Magistrale in Economia e Finanza.

Spain: Universitat Internacional de Catalunya

  • Since 2019-20, Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC) Barcelona and Birkbeck have been running a Dual Degree programme where UIC Barcelona students can attain both Bachelor in Business Administration from UIC and one of BSc EconomicsBSc Financial Economics or BSc Marketing from Birkbeck after five years of study in Barcelona and London.
  • From 2022-23, this will involve UIC students spending Year 4 in London, taking 120 credits of final year modules before returning to Barcelona in Year 5 to complete the degree at UIC.
  • This is a unique opportunity for students to gain two degrees; one at UIC Barcelona and one at Birkbeck, University of London, as well as gaining experience across differing cultures and potentially embracing work experience in these settings. Students will benefit from the chance to study in London for a University of London degree together with students from all around the world. They may even have a chance to gain work experience through internships during their year in London.
  • The learning journey is intended to be both academically rewarding and vitally useful in applying management skills to the students' work experience, thus providing a platform for students to enhance and develop their careers.

UK: British Psychotherapy Foundation

UK: Central Saint Martins/University of the Arts London

  • The Birkbeck Business School delivers an MBA in partnership with Central Saint Martins, part of University of the Arts London (UAL). This innovative degree combines creative thinking with core financial and strategic skills. Teaching is delivered at both Birkbeck and Central Saint Martins.

UK: Institute of Psychoanalysis

UK: Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA)

  • The School of Creative Arts, Culture and Communication delivers the MA Text and Performance in partnership with RADA. Students attend both institutions, which are located in the heart of Bloomsbury, to gain a deep critical understanding of theatre and performance practices.

UK: Royal College of Physicians

  • The Department of Organizational Psychology’s innovative MSc Medical Leadership is delivered in partnership with the Royal College of Physicians (RCP). This degree is designed for medical practitioners and all classes are held in purpose-built teaching facilities at the RCP.

UK: UCL Institute of Education

  • The School of Psychological Sciences offers the MA/MSc Educational Neuroscience jointly with UCL’s Institute of Education (IoE). Teaching is delivered at both Birkbeck and the IoE, and students receive a joint award upon completion of the degree.

UK: ST GEORGE'S, UNIVERSITY OF LONDON 

  • The School of Creative Arts, Culture and Communication jointly deliver an innovative Level 6 module with St. George’s, University of London, entitled: Finding a leg to stand on: Clinical, Critical and Creative Approaches to the Human Body.

UK: THE SCHOOL OF ORIENTAL AND AFRICAN STUDIES, UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON AND QUEEN MARY UNIVERSITY OF LONDON

UK: UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON

  • The School of Natural Sciences collaborate with the Department of Physics and Astronomy at UCL in the delivery of the MSc Planetary Science, which is awarded by UCL.

UK: University of Law

  • The Birkbeck Law School has an outbound progression agreement where Birkbeck students can progress on the University of Law's SQE programmes.

South America

Brazil: university of são paulo

  • Since 2010, Psychosocial Studies at Birkbeck has had a formal link with the Department of Social Psychology and the Psychology Institute at the University of São Paulo, Brazil. The partnership includes staff and student exchanges.

Chile: University Alberto Hurtado

USA

USA: Anglo-American Educational Services

  • Birkbeck has a collaboration agreement with Anglo-American Services to deliver our popular London Semester Programme. The programme allows international students to undertake a work placement in London and study a related subject at Birkbeck at the same time.

Cross-continent schemes

Europe and Canada: various institutions

  • The School of Creative Arts, Culture and Communication has a partnership with 11 European and Canadian universities, to allow students on the MA Film and Screen Media (European Pathway) to study abroad for two semesters.

International study visits for PhD students

  • Owing to the partnership with these universities, Birkbeck PhD students in History, Classics and Archaeology can visit:
  • European University Institute (EUI), Florence, Italy (one-term exchange)
  • University of Naples, Italy
  • University of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.
