Get Connected Seminar 2012
This seminar has now finished, we will be running it again at a future date.
Get Connected – getting the most out of collaborative learning
Many students find that studying at Birkbeck can be a more isolating experience than anticipated. At the same time there is an increasing emphasis on working effectively in groups, for example to prepare for a group presentation.
Studying with your peers helps you to understand better what you have learned. For example, you can check your knowledge by 'teaching' your peers and they can help you pick up anything you may have missed.
This free seminar will demonstrate the advantages of group learning and the different ways you can work together, helping you to make the most of working with your peers.

Blogs, Google Docs and creating an online study group - working collaboratively online (with Deborah Grange)
We know that our students’ time is limited so study tools that are available 24/7 can really improve your learning. The session will enable you to set up online study groups by using tools such as blogs or Google Docs. This workshop will cover:
- Blogs – what are they?
- How to set up a blog (for free)
- Posting and replying to messages
- Introduction to Google Docs
- How to use Google Docs for online collaboration
Basic web browsing skills are required for this workshop.
12pm - 1pm, Room 417
Successful group formation (with Caroline Kamau)
Working in groups is an important part of being a student, either to work collaboratively on a course assignment, to revise for exams and/or to support each other on your course.
Highly supportive groups can also, however, be very challenging and demand a range of skills from their members.
This workshop will explore how you can work more effectively in groups; a skill that will equally be very desirable in a professional context.
We would encourage you to attend the workshop in your current study group to get the most out it.
1.30pm - 3pm, Room 417
Taking on challenges, managing anxiety and preparing for exams - with a focus on working collaboratively (with Aaron Balick)
We understand that one of the biggest challenges for students is managing your time effectively before an exam, and most of all, dealing with your anxieties.
This session will help you identify the psychological obstacles that limit you in the face of an exam or other challenge and will provide you with tools that help you to address your anxieties and achieve more confidence. We will also explore how best to study and prepare collaboratively.
