Biography

I did my PhD (1971) in English Literature at Birkbeck, and worked as a Research Assistant for Professor Barbara Hardy in the Department, before taking up a post as lecturer in the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth in 1973. I returned to Birkbeck in 1988, where I worked until 2009, the last two years as a Senior Research Fellow.

I am currently working on a biography of Clara and Walter Pater called Ink Work, and editing a journalism volume of the Collected Work of Walter Pater, both for OUP. I am also co-editing a book on The News of the World. I am an active member of RSVP, the Research Society for Victorian Periodicals, and this year I am chairing their Colby prize committee; I am also involved in the new group of European scholars, ESPRIT, who focus on periodicals across Europe. I am a member of the Birkbeck Nineteenth-Century Studies steering group.

I have a keen interest in research libraries, and am chair of the Friends of Senate House Library. I continue to supervise research students, organise conferences and do occasional teaching, at Birkbeck on the MA in Victorian Literature, and for the Institute of English Studies, in the University of London where I teach on the MA in the History of the Book. I regularly offer papers at conferences at home and abroad, and do keynotes.
