Biography
Agnès Calatayud joined Birkbeck College in October 1991 as a Lecturer in French. Prior to joining Birkbeck, she was Visiting Lecturer in various universities in London.

Research overview
Agnès Calatayud is a Lecturer in French in the School of Creative Arts, Culture and Communication at Birkbeck College, University of London. Her research focuses on contemporary World cinema and on representations of France’s colonial past in modern popular culture. She has published extensively in both French and English on filmmakers such as Agnès Varda, Abbas Kiarostami and Satoshi Miki, exploring questions of authorship, memory and the politics of representation. Her work also examines a wide range of cultural productions, including French colonial songs and post-colonial cinematic practices, with a particular interest in self-portraiture in contemporary cinema. In addition to her film scholarship, Calatayud has an interest in eighteenth-century art and has published an article on Henri-Pierre Danloux’s portrait of the Baron de Besenval, held at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Her articles have appeared in Studies in French Cinema, Studies in European Cinema, Dalhousie French Studies and ejcjs.
