Biography
I arrived at Birkbeck in the summer of 2008 to develop the MA Japanese Creative Industries Studies. My research interests include brands and branding, advertising and marketing, new media, software, and media and cultural globalisation. I am particularly interested in theorising, from 'post Birmingham' media and cultural studies perspective, these new forms of cultural production and objects in Japanese and East Asian contexts.
My interest in contemporary form of cultural production stems from and is informed by my experience of working in a global advertising agency, as an account planner, and subsequent involvement in a couple of Internet start-ups in New York and Tokyo. I try to bring this experience and knowledge into my research and teaching in order to explore the connections and tensions between theories and practices.
I have a Master degree from Columbia University, New York, and am completing my PhD at the Centre for Cultural Studies at Goldsmiths, University of London. I am one of the organisers of London Asia Pacific Cultural Studies, a London wide forum for graduate students and scholars in media and cultural studies working on media and cultural issues in Pacific Asia.
