Biography
Lorraine Lim is a Lecturer in Arts Management and currently teaches Arts Policy and Planning. She completed her PhD in Cultural Policy Studies at the University of Warwick in 2009 where her thesis examined Singapore’s attempt to transform itself into a Global City for the Arts. By expanding and extending Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts of ‘field’ and ‘habitus’, her research findings are relevant not only to Singapore’s cultural policy but to other cities in the world that have also invested large amounts of resources in order to transform themselves into Capitals of Culture.
Her current main research interests are:
- Urban regeneration initiatives including sport adopted by recognised Capitals of Cultures such as London and Paris, to improve or maintain their status or increase differentiation as Capitals of Culture
- Cultural strategies currently being implemented in emerging Capitals of Cultures in Asia such as Singapore, South Korea, China and the Middle East
- History and current trajectories of cultural policy in Asia
Lorraine’s research is also informed through her past work in both Singapore and Australia where she has worked as an arts reviewer and stage manager for performances at the International Fringe Festivals in Adelaide and Melbourne. Her doctoral research was recognised with an Early Career Fellowship by the Institute of Advanced Study, University of Warwick.
