Course Overview
On this BSc Geology you will have the opportunity to study the Earth and its processes and environments. You will examine how we can best manage environments through understanding the processes of rock and mineral formation through geological time, climate-ocean-rock-biosphere interactions, and the effects of human interactions with the environment.

- This degree is accredited by the Geological Society of London, opening up a route to becoming a chartered geologist which is essential for employment in many industries. It will also equip you to progress successfully in careers in research, environmental protection, environmental hazard mitigation, and other industries and employment essential to society.
- It can be completed entirely through your attendance at classes on campus or entirely by distance learning where you take your classes online, and can include inspiring and informative fieldwork opportunities.
- Geologists play a key role in guiding governments, industry and society on how best to protect the Earth’s environment whilst using its raw materials and potential for renewable energy in the most sustainable manner.
- You will benefit from the research activities of our staff which feed into our teaching, and also through our close research collaboration with University College London (UCL) whose Earth Science department is situated nearby.

What will I learn?
You will learn how to identify key environmental indicators, such as rock, mineral and fossil assemblages, alongside landscapes and geomorphology, that are used by geologists to understand the key processes that have produced the Earth, and the effects of human interactions with the Earth.
You will also learn key aspects of biology, geography, physics, chemistry, planetary science, material science, mathematics, cartography, numerical modelling, computer science, sustainability and environmental protection.
You will use knowledge of all these different disciplines to formulate hypotheses, hypothesis tests and process-based solutions that will help humans to protect the Earth’s environments through sustainable activities.

How will I learn?
You can choose to study this BSc Geology through attendance on campus in our state-of-the-art laboratories and lecture spaces, or entirely by distance learning via online video streams, digital lecture notes and our electronic library if you choose the four years part-time route. Whether you decide to study on campus or online, you will also have the option to attend residential field classes in places such as Wales, Scotland, Greece and Morocco, and we also provide virtual online field courses as an alternative.
All lectures offer full digital lecture notes with diagrams, photographs and video content and are live-streamed and recorded so they are useful for revision purposes and learning online in different time zones. Exams are online to allow assessment of both on-campus and distance-learning students.
This course is available to study full- or part-time. If you choose to study this course on campus, classes take place in the evening.
If you require a Student visa to study in the UK, you will only be able to apply for the on-campus study option for this course. The online option will not be available to you because it may affect the conditions of your visa. If you are in receipt of a maintenance loan you must attend at least one class on campus per week.

Teaching
We encourage innovative and engaging ways of teaching to help ensure you have the best learning experience and provide a range of different modes of learning to help you juggle study with work and other commitments.
What are the methods of teaching?
Over the duration of the course, you will spend about 100 days on field studies, including 10 days at Easter each year (for which academic credit of one half-module is given) and an average of three weekend classes a year (one to three days each), and you will undertake a compulsory module of independent study.
Face-to-face lectures are supplemented by our online learning environment, where you can access course materials and watch recordings of lectures. Distance learning students can attend field classes alongside students taking the BSc degree by evening study.

How will I be assessed?
A combination of reports on field-based projects, laboratory work and written examinations. Some modules include continuous assessment through written work.

Entry Requirements
We welcome applicants without traditional entry qualifications as we base decisions on our own assessment of qualifications, knowledge and previous work experience. We may waive formal entry requirements based on judgement of academic potential.

Full-time study - how many UCAS points do I need?
Three years full-time: 112 points (e.g. A-levels BBC)
For full-time study on this course, you apply via UCAS. The UCAS tariff score applies if you have recently studied a qualification that has a UCAS tariff equivalence. UCAS provides a tariff calculator for you to work out what your qualification is worth.

For part-time study our standard requirements are a minimum of two A-levels or equivalent.

What GCSEs do I need?
Three years full-time: GCSEs required at grade A*-C or 9-4 (or equivalent) in mathematics.

Alternative entry routes
Three years full-time or four or six years part-time: Access to Higher Education Diploma with a minimum of 15 credits achieved at Merit or Distinction in a science-based subject. Students who successfully complete Birkbeck's Certificate of Higher Education in Earth History and Palaeontology, Geology, Mineralogy and Volcanology or Planetary Science with Astronomy will be considered for a place on the BSc, with the possibility of exemption from the first-year modules.

What are the English language requirements?
If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, our usual requirement is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.5, with not less than 6.0 in each of the sub-tests. We also accept other English language tests.

What are the visa and funding requirements?
If you are not from the UK and you do not already have residency here, you may need to apply for a visa.
The visa you apply for varies according to the length of your course:
- Courses of more than six months' duration: Student visa
- Courses of less than six months' duration: Standard Visitor visa
International students who require a Student visa should apply to study on our courses full-time as these qualify for Student visa sponsorship. If you are living in the UK on a Student visa, you will not be eligible to enrol to study part-time courses at Birkbeck (with the exception of some modules).
As a Student visa student, you should also apply to study on campus only, as online and flexible options of study (if they are available for your course) may affect the conditions of your visa.

Tuition fees and maintenance loans
Eligible full-time and part-time students from the UK don't have to pay any tuition fees upfront, as government loans are available to cover them.
Maintenance loans are also available for eligible full-time and part-time UK students, to help cover living costs, such as accommodation, food, travel, books and study materials. The amount you receive is means-tested and depends on where you live and study and your household income.

Am I eligible for a loan if I've previously studied?
You can apply for a government tuition fee loan for the four- and six-year part-time routes even if you already have a degree or a qualification at an equivalent or higher level (ELQ).

Additional costs
There are additional costs for trips associated with the fieldwork modules. Depending on logistics it is likely that you will visit three of the four places listed below, however locations can change:
- Northern Scotland
- Pembrokeshire, Wales
- Morocco
- Greece
The cost of each trip is between £600 and £800, and includes transport while on location, and accommodation. A full costing will be provided once we have confirmed the number of students going on each trip.
In addition, you will need to equip yourself with field-note books and stationery, compass and hammer, and GPS equipment, hand lens, walking boots and all-weather clothing depending on location.

On this BSc Geology we focus on teaching you key research methods and approaches that are vital for future employment.
In addition, on successfully graduating, you'll have gained an array of important transferable skills, including the ability to:
- write scientific documents, use spreadsheets, carry out numerical calculations, write code for computer simulations, and make observations that facilitate data collection concerning all aspects of key Earth processes

How do I apply to study full-time (UCAS entry)?
If you are applying for a full-time undergraduate course at Birkbeck you apply through UCAS. Use the Apply now button on this course page which will direct you to UCAS. There you will be prompted to sign in and create an account. You will have to give UCAS a few personal details, including your name, address and date of birth, and then you can start working on your application.
The first UCAS deadline is in January, and the majority of university applications through UCAS are made by then. Find the exact deadline date on the UCAS website. We welcome applications outside of the UCAS deadlines, so you can still apply through UCAS after the January deadline, depending on the availability of places. We also take late applications via the UCAS Clearing system in August.
