Frequently asked questions about Orientation

  1. Do I need to book?
Yes, it's important you book your place so that we can see how many people are registered for each day. However, if you do not have your username and password or are having problems using them, please do just come along to Orientation. You can also contact us if you need any help booking your place.
  2. Do I need to book for talks?
You don't need to book for talks, just come along to the room where the talk takes place (view the full Student Orientation programme). However, you will need to book for a Library tour. You can sign up for a Library tour via your My Birkbeck Profile. If you find all the Library tours are fully booked, there will be further Library tours available in October.
  3. Do I need to attend both days?
No, the programme is repeated each day, so you only need to attend once. However, if you missed a particular talk or event on one day, feel free to come along on the other day.
  4. Do I need to arrive for the start at 5.30pm?
No, many of the talks are repeated during the evening. The first hour of Orientation is often very busy, so you may find it more convenient to come later in the evening.
  5. Will I be able to meet my tutor or other academic staff?
This orientation event is designed to introduce you to all the services and facilities on offer in and around the College. You will have the opportunity to meet your tutor and other academic staff at programme subject inductions organised by your acdemic department.
  6. Will refreshments be provided?
The cafe on the ground floor of the main building will be open for the purchase of drinks and light snacks.
  7. Can I bring a friend or relative?
Yes, you are welcome to bring along a friend or relative. However, due to a limited number of places in the talks, we will need to give priority to students.
  8. Do I need to bring anything with me?
You may wish to bring a pen and paper to take notes during the talks, but otherwise there is nothing you need to bring.
