What will I learn?
On this course you will examine the essentials of management theory and practice, and the core principles and practice of business and organisations in a local and international context. You will gain a broad knowledge and expertise in the design and implementation of strategy at different levels of corporate organisations and of other types of organisation such as public, not-for-profit and cooperative.

How will I learn?
You will learn through a mixture of lectures, interactive seminars and hands-on workshops, tailored to bridge theory and practice. Studying real-world case studies will help you to foster practical problem-solving skills. This MSc is available to study full- or part-time with classes taking place in the evening. Some modules may also offer some classes in the daytime.

MRes Management
The MRes Management is designed for students with a good academic background who wish to improve their research skills and do a substantial piece of dissertation research. The research training modules are the same as those taken by our MPhil/PhD students; the MRes is suitable for students who are considering undertaking a PhD in Management.
You may choose subject-specific modules from within the area of business and management, and other social science disciplines, in keeping with your individual research interests. It has an evening timetable with classes taking place in the evening.

You must complete modules worth a total of 180 credits, consisting of:
- eight compulsory modules (15 credits each)
- a 12,000-word dissertation (60 credits).
MRes:
You must complete modules worth a total of 180 credits, consisting of:
- four compulsory modules (60 credits)
- one or two option modules (30 credits)
- a 20,000-word dissertation (90 credits).

What are the methods of teaching?
Each module is taught via lectures and seminars lasting one term (autumn, spring or summer).

MSc: Examinations, coursework and a 12,000-word dissertation.
MRes: Examinations, coursework and a 20,000-word dissertation.

Entry requirements
Our standard postgraduate entry requirement is a second-class honours degree (2:2 or above) from a UK university, or an equivalent international qualification.

We welcome applicants without traditional entry qualifications as we base decisions on our own assessment of qualifications, knowledge and previous work experience. We may waive formal entry requirements based on judgement of academic potential.

What are the English language requirements?
If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, our usual requirement is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.5, with not less than 6.0 in each of the sub-tests. We also accept other English language tests.

What are the visa and funding requirements?
If you are not from the UK and you do not already have residency here, you may need to apply for a visa.
The visa you apply for varies according to the length of your course:
- Courses of more than six months' duration: Student visa
- Courses of less than six months' duration: Standard Visitor visa
International students who require a Student visa should apply to study on our courses full-time as these qualify for Student visa sponsorship. If you are living in the UK on a Student visa, you will not be eligible to enrol to study part-time courses at Birkbeck (with the exception of some modules).
As a Student visa student, you should also apply to study on campus only, as online and flexible options of study (if they are available for your course) may affect the conditions of your visa.

Student visa students: dependants
This MRes is classified as a Postgraduate Taught (PGT) programme. Under UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) rules, Student visa students on this course are not eligible to bring dependants to the UK.

Credits and accredited prior learning (APL)
If you have studied at university (or have an HND or Foundation Degree), you may have accumulated credits. It may be possible to transfer these from your previous study to Birkbeck or another institution.
