Reimbursement of quarantine and PCR testing costs 2021-22

We are doing everything we can to limit the impact of COVID-19 on your plans this year and look forward to welcoming you to Birkbeck soon.

The advice provided below is correct at time of publication, and is subject to change in line with Government restrictions.

Please note: The online reimbursement form will be unavailable due to maintenance from 5pm on Friday 29 October until the deadline. Please if you cannot submit your form in time. We will contact all applicants to date with further guidance.

RED LIST COUNTRIES - REFUNDED QUARANTINE PACKAGE

  • To help with your travel plans, we will be refunding the cost of the managed quarantine hotel and test package for all new and returning internationally domiciled students in September 2021.
  • Currently, if you have travelled from or through a red list country in the 10 days prior to arriving in the UK, you must (subject to change in line with Government restrictions):
    • quarantine for 10 days in a managed quarantine hotel in the UK (the day you arrive in England counts as day 0) and,
    • take a COVID-19 test on or before day 2, and on or after day 8 of quarantine.
  • The cost of the hotel quarantine and COVID-19 test package is £2,285, which you will need to pay prior to arriving in the UK. To find out more about which countries are on the red list, the hotel quarantine process and how to make a booking, please visit the UK Government website.
  • To be reimbursed £2,285 for the quarantine package, you will be required to complete the online reimbursement form once you have enrolled and arrived at Birkbeck. Read our terms and conditions.
  • If you are travelling from or through a red list country, we recommend that you arrive in the UK by 18 September 2021. This will allow you to complete the 10-day quarantine before coming in to Birkbeck ready to join your classes at the start of term.
  • We appreciate there is still a lot of uncertainty, that’s why the enrolment deadline has been extended to 18 September - you now need to be fully enrolled by 18 September. The original published date was 1 September. Read our terms and conditions.

AMBER LIST COUNTRIES

  • Currently, if you have travelled from or through an amber list country in the 10 days prior to arriving in the UK, you must:
    • quarantine for 10 days in the place you are staying 
    • take a COVID-19 test on or before day 2, and on or after day 8 of quarantine. 
  • To find out more about which countries are on the amber list, the quarantine process and how to book for a test, please visit the UK Government website
  • If you have booked accommodation in University of London halls, you can move into your room for the 10 days you are required to self-isolate.
  • We will cover the cost up to £210 of any COVID-19 testing you are required to take on arrival in the UK, in line with Government guidance. To be reimbursed for the cost, you will be required to complete the online reimbursement form once you have enrolled and arrived at Birkbeck. Read our terms and conditions.
  • For our students who need to self-isolate, we will have a range of fun virtual activities for you to take part in and there will be a group of friendly student ambassadors available to ensure you feel welcome and to help with any questions you might have, before you start your studies. We also have an exciting set of social activities planned for our new students arriving in the UK.

GREEN LIST COUNTRIES

  • If you have travelled from a country on the green list, you are not required to self-isolate on your arrival. However, before you travel you must:
    • take a COVID-19 test 
    • book and pay for a COVID-19 test to be taken two days after arrival in England.
  • To find out more about which countries are on the green list and how to book for a test, please visit the UK Government website.
  • We will cover the cost of up to £210 of any COVID-19 testing you are required to take on arrival in the UK, in line with Government guidance. How to apply

  • In order to apply for reimbursement of managed hotel quarantine and/or PCR testing costs, you must first complete our online reimbursement form.
  • Please note: The online reimbursement form will be unavailable due to maintenance from 5pm on Friday 29 October. We will contact all applicants to date with further guidance.
  • The next step is to provide supporting evidence (read our terms and conditions for details). We will contact all eligible students to advise how to submit supporting evidence.

COVID-19 VACCINATION

The COVID-19 vaccination is being offered to everyone aged 18 or over in the UK for free, regardless of their nationality or immigration status. Once you have registered with a local GP in the UK, you can book your first and second COVID-19 vaccinations if required.

PASSENGER LOCATOR FORM

Before travelling to the UK, you must also complete a Passenger Locator Form. The form must be completed 48 hours before you travel.

You will need to show your completed form when you check in to travel or board your plane, train or ferry to the UK. You may be fined if you have not completed the form by the time you reach the UK border. You also may not be allowed to enter the UK.

Accommodation - term time 

Our rooms in the University of London’s halls of residence are near to our campus, so you’re never more than 15 minutes from our teaching, and social facilities. If you’re studying full time, you can apply for a room at the intercollegiate halls.

If you have applied for accommodation, met the conditions of your course offer and accepted your place at Birkbeck, you will be contacted by email to confirm your accommodation. We will always do our best to meet your preferences if your specific room type is available.
