Birkbeck supports its alumni community by increasing the discount for further study to 20%

Birkbeck responds to COVID-19 by offering additional financial support to recent graduates and alumni looking to undertake a master’s degree.

Given the global pandemic and the unprecedented uncertainty that has arisen from it, many people will be looking to upskill or reskill to enhance their career prospects and build on existing achievements. Birkbeck’s evening classes mean the university is ideally placed to enable learners to fit study into their life.

To make upskilling as accessible as possible to the Birkbeck community, the College has doubled the alumni discount from 10 to 20% for the 2020/2021 academic year. This will apply to all Birkbeck alumni who have studied at any level and are enrolling on any master’s degree (MA, MSc, LLM and MRes), starting in autumn 2020.

Nic Katona, Director of Development and Alumni, commented: “I am so pleased we are able to offer this opportunity of further study to our alumni especially during this difficult time. For many, Birkbeck provided essential knowledge and experience to further their career, pursue their passion and change their circumstances. We are proud that our graduates are involved in work across the world that makes a difference to society, strengthens economies and transforms communities – this has never been more pertinent than it is right now. Many alumni have said to me how they want to come back to Birkbeck to build on the experience they had and we hope that this will help make that a reality.  I look forward to seeing many of you in the Autumn.”

Professor Matthew Innes, Vice-Master, added: “For nearly 200 years Birkbeck has been providing support for people who are balancing work, study and family commitments. With the current pandemic and restrictions on social life, many members of our community are reviewing plans and priorities, and considering a return to study. We hope this additional financial support and our unique evening teaching will mean alumni are able to consider further study at Birkbeck, offering them the valuable opportunity to transform their lives by enhancing their skills or changing the direction of their career.”

Birkbeck has always made the case for part-time, flexible higher education and promoting lifelong learning; and in 2023 the College will be celebrating its 200th anniversary, remembering its revolutionary inception and looking ahead to the future.
