Discounts

We know how important study is to you. That's why, at Birkbeck, we offer two discounts.

2022/23 10% discount for union members

2022/23 will be the last academic year new undergraduate students will be eligible for the 10% discount.

  • For the academic year 2022/23, if you are a member of a union recognised by the Trades Union Congress (TUC), without a first degree (e.g. BA, BSc or LLB), you can claim a 10% discount on eligible Birkbeck undergraduate courses only. This includes:
  • Your claim is valid for one year only. If your course runs for longer than one year, you will need to submit a new claim each year with requisite proof of union membership.
  • You can only apply for and claim your discount once enrolment is completed.
Existing students in receipt of the discount
  • If you are currently part way through your studies (certificates, undergraduate and postgraduate level), already in receipt of the discount and able to provide the requisite proof of your membership of a TUC-recognised union, Birkbeck will continue to provide this discount until the completion of your studies.

How to claim

  • Check the criteria to ensure you are eligible for this discount.
  • Once you have been invited to enrol, to claim the discount you will need to:
    • Step one: Enrol on the programme
    • Step twoComplete the online application form to request the discount.
    • Step three: Contact your union to request verification of membership - if you don't already have a contact there, Head Office will be able to assist. Find your union details
    • Step four: A union contact with an official union email address must  within 28 days of your enrolment to confirm the following:
      • your full name
      • membership number
      • current membership status
      • date you joined the union.
      • If you are a new applicant to the discount, then your union will also need to confirm that to the best of their knowledge, you do not have a degree-level qualification already.
  • Further guidance is available on the student FAQ and union FAQ documents.

Eligibility

  • From the academic year 2021/22, new applicants to the discount will need to meet both of the following criteria: you are studying an undergraduate course at Birkbeck (accredited short courses, CertHE modular or programme, Foundation, BA, BSc, LLB) and you do not have a first degree (e.g. BA, BSc or LLB), as well as the two additional criteria below.
  • If you have previously received the union discount on your current programme of study at Birkbeck, then you remain eligible to apply for the discount for the remainder of your current course (provided you continue to meet the two additional criteria below).
  • You must have been a member of a recognised trade union for at least three months prior to the date of enrolment.
  • You must be paying your fees yourself - either self-funded or via a government loan from Student Finance England. You are not eligible if somebody else is paying your fees (e.g. your employer). If you are part-sponsored, the 10% discount will be applied to the proportion of the fees that you are paying.

20% fees discount for Birkbeck alumni

For the 2021/22 and 2022/23 academic year, Birkbeck alumni who have gained a Bachelor or Master’s degree will receive a 20% tuition fee discount when enrolling onto a Master's degree (MA, MSc, LLM and MRes). This also applies to the Master of Business Administration (MBA) that we jointly run with Central St Martins.

Once enrolment is open, please complete the online application form which will be linked here once it is live. When you complete our online enrolment, you will be asked if you want to take advantage of the 20% alumni discount. No additional proof should be required, since we will already have a record of you having completed an award with us.

Please note: The discounts on course fees that Birkbeck offers are mutually exclusive – if you are eligible for more than one discount, you may only claim one.

You must also be paying your fees yourself - either self-funded or via a government loan from Student Finance England. You are not eligible if somebody else is paying your fees (e.g. your employer). If you are part-sponsored, the 20% discount will be applied to the proportion of the fees that you are paying.
