Birkbeck’s Lifelong Learning Guarantee

Birkbeck is introducing a new scheme to support its commitment to lifelong learning for its students and alumni.

The full launch is planned for November 2022, but some of the key points about the scheme are outlined below.

ABOUT BIRKBECK'S LIFELONG LEARNING GUARANTEE

  • Birkbeck's Lifelong Learning Guarantee is a scheme that gives practical support to future and current Birkbeck students, and Birkbeck alumni, in their lifelong learning journeys.
  • We are creating a Birkbeck Lifelong Learning Account for each of our students and, within this, provide significant discounts and incentives to support lifelong learners committing to Birkbeck.
  • Students accumulate ‘Learning Points’ in their account as they complete programmes of study (‘awards’) at Birkbeck. These translate into discounts against future study, which in turn attract further Learning Points.

LEARNING POINTS EXPLAINED

  • Learning Points are points that you receive when you have completed a programme of study at Birkbeck and received an academic award (please see the section titled 'Learning Points received for completing a programme' for further information on awards).
  • These points can be redeemed to reduce the cost of many of the programmes of study, short courses, and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses offered by Birkbeck.

HOW LEARNING POINTS ARE EARNED

  • You can earn Learning Points by completing certain academic programmes at Birkbeck. These points are gained when you have completed a programme of study at Birkbeck and received an academic award (e.g. BA or MSc) or an 'exit award' (an award given for partial completion of an academic programme).

LEARNING POINTS RECEIVED FOR COMPLETING A PROGRAMME

  • The current number of points that you can receive for completing an award in 2022/23 (including exit awards) is outlined below.
    • Certificate in Higher Education (CertHE): 1,000 Learning Points
    • Foundation degree (Fd): 1,500 Learning Points
    • Bachelor's degree (BA/BSc/LLB): 2,000 Learning Points
    • Bachelor's Degree with Foundation Year (BA/BSc/LLB): 2,000 Learning Points
    • Graduate Certificate (Grad Cert): 500 Learning Points
    • Graduate Diploma (Grad Dip): 1,000 Learning Points
    • Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert): 500 Learning Points
    • Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip): 1,000 Learning Points
    • Master's degree (MA/MSc/MPhil/MRes): 1,500 Learning Points
    • Doctorate/Professional Doctorate (PhD): 1,000 Learning Points
  • Please note: The number of Learning Points earned for an award may change in future academic years.
  • To promote Birkbeck’s portfolio of master's programmes any students or alumni who have a Birkbeck bachelor's degree that was awarded prior to September 2023 will be given an additional 2,000 Learning Points, doubling the value of their award to 4,000 points. The additional 2,000 points can only be redeemed against the cost of a master's programme; they are also time limited and must be used within 12 months of receiving the Learning Points for the award.

WHAT LEARNING POINTS CAN BE USED FOR

  • Learning Points can be redeemed for a reduction in the cost of certain programmes and short courses. The amount of the reduction can vary by programme and may change over time.

PROGRAMMES AND SHORT COURSES THAT LEARNING POINTS CAN BE USED ON

  • Learning Points can be used for programmes or short courses directly provided by Birkbeck. Programmes or courses offered by third-party providers are not eligible. Programmes or courses offered in collaboration with other providers may be eligible on a case-by-case basis.

WHAT LEARNING POINTS ARE WORTH

  • The value of Learning Points depends on when you choose to redeem them and the programme or short course you wish to redeem them against. For example, with most programmes, for 2023/24 entry, redeeming 1,000 points will reduce your fee by £500 (i.e. 2,000 points would be equal to a £1,000 reduction). This includes most standard taught and research programmes including Cert HEs, bachelor's degrees, master's degrees and PhDs.
  • Points can also be redeemed at this value on a wide variety of Birkbeck short courses. Some courses may offer point redemption at a different value, and information on this will be available on the course webpage.
  • Please note that the redemption value of points is determined at the time they are redeemed and not at the time they are awarded.

WHEN LEARNING POINTS ARE AVAILABLE TO BE REDEEMED

  • Points can be redeemed against the cost of programme or short course with a start date in October 2023 or later.

HOW TO REDEEM YOUR LEARNING POINTS

  • You will be given the option to redeem your Learning Points when you complete the online enrolment process for an eligible programme or short course.

LEARNING POINTS - EACH YEAR OF A PROGRAMME

  • Learning Points can only be redeemed once when you first enrol on your programme or short course. You will not be able to use points for any subsequent years of that programme.

LEARNING POINTS AND THE PREVIOUS ALUMNI DISCOUNT SCHEME

  • The Lifelong Learning Guarantee scheme replaces the previous alumni discount. The alumni discount in its current form will run for the last time for 2022-23 entry, including January starts in January 2023.
  • Please note that Birkbeck students or alumni who have a Birkbeck bachelor’s degree that was awarded prior to September 2023, will be given a top-up to their Learning Points that can be redeemed against the cost of a master’s degree. These additional Learning Points must be used within 12 months. This is detailed under the 'Learning Points received for completing a programme' section above.

BIRKBECK ALUMNI - LEARNING POINTS FOR PROGRAMMES THAT HAVE PREVIOUSLY BEEN COMPLETED

  • Once the scheme has been launched, current Birkbeck alumni will be able claim Learning Points for awards they have completed in the past. These points will expire three years after they have been added to your Birkbeck Lifelong Learning Account.

MAXIMUM NUMBER OF LEARNING POINTS REDEEMABLE

  • You can usually redeem Learning Points against the cost of a programme or short course up to a maximum of 50% of the programme's overall fee. In some cases, specific programmes or short courses may have a different maximum number of redeemable points.

USING LEARNING POINTS AGAINST THE COST OF A PROGRAMME YOU ARE ALREADY ENROLLED ON

  • You can only use Learning Points when you first enrol on a programme or short course.

LEARNING POINTS WITH OTHER DISCOUNTS OR SCHOLARSHIPS

  • In most cases, Learning Points cannot be used in combination with other discounts or scholarships. If a particular discount can be used in conjunction with Learning Points, it will be explicitly stated in the terms and conditions for that discount.

LEARNING POINTS AND ADMISSION ON TO PROGRAMMES

  • Having Learning Points does not guarantee entry to a programme. Any entry requirements for the programme will still need to be met.

VALIDITY OF LEARNING POINTS

  • All unspent Learning Points will expire three years after the date you were last in attendance on any Birkbeck programme. In some cases, Learning Points may be awarded that have a fixed expiry date e.g. 12 months. These points will need to be used within that period, after which they will expire.
  • When the scheme launches in November 2022, points will be assigned to alumni with awards from previous years and these points will be valid for three years.

MANAGING YOUR LEARNING POINTS

  • Once you have received your first Learning Points, your Birkbeck Lifelong Learning Account will be created and you will be given access to an online portal to check and manage your points.

DONATING OR TRANSFERRING YOUR LEARNING POINTS

  • Learning Points cannot be donated or transferred to another person. They can only be redeemed by you and used for programmes or short courses that you are joining.
