A

Amicus - the union for technical and craft staff - www.amicustheunion.org

Appeal - the process through which staff can submit an appeal against the grade to which they have been assimilated on the new pay and grading structure

Assimilation – this is the way in which jobs and the actual job holders are moved from the current pay spine to the single pay and grading structure.

Attraction and retention payment - the process for apply for a supplement in order to, for instance, successfully retain or recruit staff.

C

Current pay – the salary staff received immediately before the date of implementation, exclusive of allowances.

D

Discretionary points – these are the spinal column points (SCP) to reward individuals whose contribution, on a sustained basis, exceeds that normally expected in their role in terms of high levels of outcomes and of competence.  These SCPs are above the incremental section or contribution threshold of a pay grade and there is no automatic progression through these.

E

Effective date – the common point of reference date across all staff categories for the purposes of the calculation of, for instance, pay arrears.

F

FAQ - frequently asked question - see FAQs.

FNG - the Framework Negotiation Group - the College's three recognised trade unions are working in partnership with College Management to agree the way forward for the implementation of the NFA.  See contact us.

G

Green circling – Where current pay is lower than the pay for the new grade, this is known as being ‘green circled’.

H

Hay job evaluation - this is a tool for determining the ‘size' of a job.  See Hay job evaluation FAQs.

Headroom - the scope for incremental progress within the grade.

I

Implementation date – the actual date that the individual is moved to the new pay and grading structure.

Increment – a pay grade comprises a number of incremental and contribution related points.  The jobholder normally progresses through the increments up to the contribution threshold.

J

JDD - job description document.  See JDD FAQs.

N

NFA - National Framework Agreement.  See NFA FAQs.

No detriment principles - the principles of 'no detriment' were negotiated by UCU with the University and Colleges Employers' Association (UCEA) at a national level.  The principles were outlined in a Memorandum of Understanding between UCU and UCEA which is available from here.

The no detriment principles have been built into the progression rules for current staff assimilating to the new pay and grading structure and can be viewed here

P

Pay for grade – the corresponding salary for the grade following job evaluation.
Pay protection - the practice of protecting the pay of individuals whose jobs are red-circled (downgraded) following the job evaluation exercise.  This approach does not result in an immediate loss of pay.

R

Red circling – Where current pay is higher than the pay for the new grade, this is known as being ‘red circled’.  See also Pay Protection

S

Spinal column points (SCP) – the incremental steps that make up the pay spine.  Each spinal column point has an associated salary value.
