Studying at undergraduate level

Our undergraduate degrees aim to raise your language skills to an advanced or near-native standard (depending on the course and your language level at entry). They also provide you with a critical appreciation of the literature, art, history, philosophy, cinema and cultural history of your relevant areas of study.

Subject area

You can choose to focus on a single honours degree in French Studies or German or, if you are starting from beginner’s or intermediate level in French Studies and German, you can take a degree in Culture and Language (French) or Culture and Language (German).

Alternatively, you can take a combined degree that includes two Modern Languages, Linguistics and Languages, and French or German and Management.

Course structure

For all of our courses, you will be required to complete a total of 12 modules, normally over four years, and pass a minimum of 10 in order to be awarded the BA Honours degree. For most courses, these include language, literature and culture modules and a final-year project.

Assessment requirements

Most modules, apart from Language modules, are assessed by two essays of 2000-2500 words, written in either English or in the target language of study (depending on the programme), during the Christmas and Easter holidays, and one three-hour unseen written examination in the summer term.
