BSc Financial Economics with Accounting

Programme Director: Emanuela Sciubba

This degree will provide you with a broad economics and finance background and basic accounting skills. You will gain an extensive knowledge of the financial sector and its concerns. Quantitative skills are stressed throughout the degree and students receive extensive exposure to the use of computers and data analysis.

The course will prepare you for a range of jobs in both the private and public sectors. The Department has an excellent reputation for the quality of our teaching, providing training for employers such as the Treasury and the Bank of England. Our graduates go on to careers in all sectors of the financial services industry, both in the UK and overseas.

For the first one year (FT)/ two years (PT) of this programme, you study with those on our BSc Financial Economics, learning the core subjects in economics and finance. Then in Year 2 (FT)/ Year 3 (PT) you can decide which of the two course pathways to follow focusing on either the “technical” or the “applied” side of the course. From then on you take a mixture of modules from the BSc Financial Economics, and the BA Accounting and Management offered by the Department of Management. You will therefore be able to devote up to a third of the course to accounting-related topics. Those wishing to focus more on accounting are encouraged to take BSc Accounting and Finance offered by the Department of Management.

The course is fairly demanding in terms of its use of quantitative techniques, and you will be expected to keep up with the pace of the lectures. If you have not studies maths for some time, Birkbeck runs an intensive two-week evening preliminary or refresher course in basic mathematics prior to the start of the degree.
