Trainee placement

We offer a placement for trainees who are undertaking a qualification in psychodynamic counselling or psychotherapy and are interested in gaining experience and developing their skills in time-limited psychodynamic counselling in the HE sector. Trainees will have at least one training case of 12 months but also have shorter cases of 6-12 weeks.

Structure

The placement has a strong focus on short-term psychodynamic work and trainees will receive training on working with focus, formulation and endings. In the second year of the placement, we also offer training on assessment and the chance to conduct some assessments yourself, subject to experience. You will also be invited to attend team clinical meetings and will get a chance to join in discussions of staff counsellors’ clinical cases and present your own. We are a small supportive team, and trainees have found the placement containing and inclusive.

We also run an annual training series for counsellors in HE which, as an honorary staff member, you will be invited to. Please refer to past events for information about how these work.

You will need to commit to one working Friday (9am - 5pm) for a minimum of one academic year and a maximum of two. You will have a case load of up to three clients and we provide weekly clinical supervision.

Our service is psychodynamic. However, we would consider integrative counsellors who have a sound understanding of the theory and practice of psychodynamic principles, and a demonstrable interest in working psychodynamically. This is a voluntary position.
