Birkbeck Training Series

Launched in 2018 by the Student Counselling Service at Birkbeck, University of London, the workshops are created by and for HE counsellors and tailored specifically to short-term work with students. The CPD workshops from previous years have proved an invaluable space for meeting, sharing and learning.

2020 brought uncertainty and change for counsellors and students, both personally and professionally. The COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown led to rapid changes as we adapted to working from home and offering counselling or other support to students remotely, often for the first time. In addition to the global health and economic crisis, the Black Lives Matter movement and protests have been significant.

In this series, we are offering workshops to collectively contemplate what it means to work with trauma and difference, beginning with race and neurodiversity. These are complex topics and in a brief workshop we hope to facilitate a meaningful conversation that you can build on afterwards and apply to your work.

2020/21 SERIES

In response to the pandemic, we moved our workshops online to make them more accessible. Participant feedback has been positive about how engaging and interactive they are, with client material to bring it to life.

Our 2020/21 workshops will be half days with moderators available for a better online learning experience. Although we have waiting lists, we felt it important to limit ticket numbers so you have more opportunity to engage directly with the trainer and other participants, plus the flexibility to anonymise questions in the question and answer session.

As many of us find ourselves working remotely, it’s a special time for us to connect with our HE student counsellor colleagues around the country and share our learning. We look forward to welcoming you to the 2020/21 Birkbeck Training Series.

Please note, the trainer’s perspective is one of many and we aim to provide a respectful space for thinking. The views expressed by trainers or any other individual in relation to the workshops are not necessarily those of Birkbeck.
