About the Birkbeck Business School
The Birkbeck Business School draws together a number of different academic disciplines:
- accounting and finance
- economics
- marketing
- business, strategy and analytics
- people, work and organisations
- management, innovation and entrepreneurship.
Until our 2023 restructure, they were housed in the Department of Economics, Mathematics and Statistics, the Department of Organizational Psychology, and the Department of Management.
Our history and facilities
Our academic pedigrees have their roots across different centuries. While we have been providing world-class training in economics since 1826, it wasn't until 1992 that Birkbeck established a Department of Management.
The Department of Organizational Psychology was launched in 1962, as the first of its kind in the UK. It was one of the first departments at Birkbeck to offer distance and network learning at postgraduate level.
The school is based in the Clore Management Centre, a purpose-built teaching and research facility overlooking Bloomsbury’s Torrington Square.
Our students
We take great pride in nurturing and guiding students who become thoughtful, adaptable practitioners in the workplace and beyond, as well as helping them to develop the knowledge and skills required to operate in complex, global organisations and to make a positive difference in society.
Our academic staff and research
We are research-driven, across a wide range of disciplines. Our academic staff create new knowledge, push boundaries and publish in leading academic journals.
The 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF) results show that:
- 84% of our economics and econometrics research outputs were ranked 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent'
- huge gains in outputs, impact and environment put our management studies in the top 50%.
We’re also successful communicators, regularly contributing to public debate, policy and practice. Through our teaching expertise, we translate complex ideas to our students, ensuring they in turn are able to make their own valuable contributions.
Our research centres draw on the expertise of colleagues in the school and across Birkbeck to provide leading research on topics of contemporary interest to business organisations and public sector institutions. And that research informs our own teaching.
Our programmes
We offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in accounting, business, coaching, human resources, international business, management, marketing, occupational psychology, organisational behaviour, and other specialist areas.
You may already be working within these fields, in which case our MSc programmes will broaden and challenge your understanding. Or you may be looking to branch out into a new area via an undergraduate programme, or a Mini MBA. We also offer doctoral programmes in economics, evidence-based human resource management, management, occupational psychology and organisational psychology.
We are affiliated with professional accreditation bodies in management, accounting and marketing, and many of our programmes lead to full or partial professional body accreditation.
We also offer a number of collaborative programmes in partnership with other institutions, including Central Saint Martins UAL, Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, Dongbei University of Finance and Economics and Le Cordon Bleu London.
