Reasons to study

The School of Law's strong critical approach to legal and criminological issues has been recognised by REF2021, with the majority of our research publications deemed of world leading, or international, standing. We have a reputation for critical work on all aspects of law - from trade, through to intellectual property, human rights, private law, equalities law, immigration and social justice. Our approach to law attracts graduate students from a wide range of jurisdictions.

As a student within the Department, you will benefit from a busy programme of activities during term time, including reading groups, mock trials, lectures and regular seminars. We have strong links with the legal profession, attracting academic visitors from leading law firms, chambers and prestigious law schools across the globe.

We work closely with Birkbeck Talent and the Careers Office in helping our graduates to network and secure work placements and places on mentoring schemes.

We are particularly interested in multi-disciplinary approaches to the study of law with a special interest in introducing the scholarly values and methods of the social sciences and humanities into the studies of law.
