Undergraduate courses

BSc, MSci and Certificates in Higher Education

The department offers undergraduate degree pathways in biomedicine to suit students coming from all backgrounds. Some of our best students have come to us through unconventional study routes. Even if you don’t have A or O levels, we'll consider your application if you’re over 21, providing you have a genuine interest in science and a commitment to study it at university level. You can find out more about course entrance requirements on course prospectus pages.

For students who have been away from study for some time, or who do not meet the direct entry criteria for the BSc, we offer foundation year entry or an alternative certificate pathway. For students looking for a degree with more research experience, our MSci programme enables students to undertake an extended, independent project within one of our research teams.

Royal Society of Biology accreditation for BSc Biomedicine

Our BSc in Biomedicine has gained interim accreditation from the Royal Society of Biology, which recognises those degree programmes which provide an outstanding education in bioscience, giving graduates enhanced employability.

Head of Department, Professor Carolyn Moores, describes the key advantages of studying biomedicine at Birkbeck.

Biomedicine

  • Biomedicine involves applying scientific knowledge to tackle problems in health and disease.
  • You will study a wide range of subjects including molecular and cell biology, physiology, genetics, biochemistry and microbiology.
  • Extensive hands-on practical experience in our excellent teaching labs will give you the chance to develop your technical skills and confidence.
  • The degree is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology recognising that graduates will have the skills and knowledge to thrive in a global work market.
