Department of Biological Sciences recognised for excellence by the Royal Society of Biology

The society has awarded Birkbeck’s BSc Biomedicine degree with accreditation, providing an assurance that students will graduate with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in a global market.

Professor Carolyn Moores, Head of the Department of Biological Sciences and Professor of Structural Biology

The Royal Society of Biology (RSB), the leading professional body for biological sciences in the UK, has granted Birkbeck’s BSc Biomedicine degree with interim accreditation status in recognition of its outstanding programme. The course will be awarded full accreditation when this year’s cohort of first year students graduate in summer 2023.

The accreditation recognises excellence by identifying degree programmes that offer an outstanding education in bioscience. Institutions are required to undertake a rigorous assessment and meet a defined set of criteria, providing evidence that graduates meet learning outcomes including subject knowledge, technical ability and transferable skills.

Professor Carolyn Moores, Head of the Department of Biological Sciences and Professor of Structural Biology, commented: “Our hard-working students on the RSB-endorsed programme will now have the additional benefits of graduating with a widely-recognised accredited degree, enhancing their employability”.

BSc Biomedicine graduates will also be entitled to one year of free membership to the RSB, opening up professional networking opportunities, access to grants, and enhanced professional recognition. The RSB represents over 17,500 biologists from all areas of the life sciences.
