Promotional videos for Birkbeck departments

  • We also produce short videos (usually under two-and-a-half minutes) to promote a department, course or subject area and to give prospective students a flavour of studying at Birkbeck.
  • These videos can be hosted and promoted alongside other Birkbeck videos on the College's social media channels and hosted on YouTube and SoundCloud. They can be displayed on the online prospectus and on departmental pages.
  • This service is free, but there may be additional costs, depending on the availability of Media Services staff, the set-up and take-down time, the length of filming, and the amount of post-production editing required.

RECORDING BIRKBECK LECTURES

  • For a basic recording of your event, we recommend using Panopto, which is a video capture system installed in teaching rooms.
    • Panopto can record a video of the speaker(s) and present them side-by-side with their PowerPoint presentation(s).
    • Panopto recordings are not high quality.
    • If you use Panopto already, it is simple to log in to the classroom PC (with your ITS username and password), select the Panopto software icon, and log on via Moodle. You then start the recording, after ensuring the camera and microphones are working.
    • We also use Panopto as a cloud-hosting resource for the events we film and the promotional videos we make.
  • For a more professional video recording of your event, we can film your event using two cameras and then edit the video afterwards to balance colour, maximise audio and improve the flow. We can also add on-screen captions, such as the names of speakers, presentation slides, and other features seen in documentary-style videos. Please note that editing often takes longer than the initial filming.
    • This service is free, but there may be additional costs, depending on the availability of Media Services staff, the set-up and take-down time, the length of the event, and the amount of post-production editing required.
    • To book this service, phone us on +44 (0)20 7631 6133 or

Transcoding technical services

  • We can help with editing, storage, transcoding  and transferring videos to other formats for teaching, including:
    • VHS to DVD, BluRay or digital files
    • DVD to digital files
    • analogue audio cassettes to digital files or MP3 audio
    • minidisk audio files to digital files
    • high-resolution digital video files to web-appropriate formats, such as MP4
    • video file types (such as QuickTime and Windows Media Player) or other formats
    • negatives, slides, prints, contact sheets to digital image files
    • glass-plate negatives to prints or digital image files
    • other formats and file types
