Certificate of Higher Education in Psychology or Applied Psychology

If you aren’t yet sure what you want to study

If you aren’t yet sure which degree is for you – or whether you want to complete a full degree – our Certificate of Higher Education in Psychology or Applied Psychology might be best for you. These allow you to test your interest and if you decide you want to continue some of the courses may count towards the first year of your degree (see below for details). This is because our Certificate of Higher Education is the equivalent to the first year of a full-time degree but has no entry requirements (apart from sufficient spoken and written English to study effectively at university level). You don’t have to sign up for a full Certificate but can take one course at a time, and you can choose which courses you take.

People take our Certificates for a variety of reasons: general interest; to support their work; to test whether they are really interested in academic Psychology; and/or to build confidence that they can successfully study at university level.

As a consequence, many students choose to take the first year of their degree on the Certificate programme - particularly if they have been away from study for some time or lack of confidence for any reason.

Teaching on our Certificates

Teaching on our Certificate courses is very different to the teaching on our degree programmes. Classes are small (a maximum of 25 people) and teaching includes a lot of discussion and exercises to help your understanding and learning. Although taught and assessed at the level of first year degree courses, courses on the Certificate programme assume no previous knowledge. Support to help students develop the skills required to successfully complete the learning and assessment is built into each course.

As a consequence, many students chose to take the first year of their degree on the Certificate programme – particularly if they have been away from study for some time or lack confidence for any reason.

Transferring credit from Certificate courses to degrees

Once you have successfully completed specific courses on the Certificate of Higher Education in Psychology with grades of 50+%, you may progress onto the second year of our 4 year BSc Psychology or the second year of our FD Psychology for Educational Professionals. You may also apply for transfer to other programmes in the College including BSc Social Sciences and BSc Business Psychology. It’s worth noting that students who start their studies on the Certificate programme tend to do well in the studies on our degrees.

Reduced fees

Fees for Certificate courses are lower than those on the degree.
