  • You have to complete an online registration form before you access the data for the first time.

Registering for the first time

1.  After selecting your dataset, you will be asked to login with your IT Services username and password.

2. Complete the online registration form.  You must include an email address and it is recommended that you use your Birkbeck College email address as it provides verification that you are a legitimate academic user.

3. Accept the terms and conditions.

4. You will then be sent an email with a link that you need to activate. This will complete the registration process.

What does it cover?

  • Formerly the Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS), the UK Data Service provides access to a wide range of key economic and social data, both quantitative and qualitative. The data can be downloaded in tables and graphs and also exported to Excel.
  • The four data headings are
  1. Labour market - Key labour market information including:  Labour Force Surveys; Annual Population Survey; Health Survey for England and the Family Resources Survey amongst others.
  2. Housing and the local environment - Key studies on housing and the local environment including: British Crime Survey; British Household Panel Survey; English Housing Survey; European Quality of Life Survey; European Social Survey; Families and Children Study and Understanding Society amongst others.
  3. Crime and social control - key studies about crime, social order and related issues including: British Crime Survey; British Social Attitudes Survey; Citizenship Survey; Offending, Crime and Justice Survey and World Bank World Development Indicators amongst others.
  4. Health and health behaviour - key studies on health and health-related behaviour including: 1970 British Cohort Study; Millennium Cohort Study; Census and Health and Lifestyle Survey amongst others.
