Renata Salecl

Professor Renata Salecl has been appointed to a Visiting Professorship in the School of Law commencing November 2009.

Professor Salecl is senior researcher in criminology at the Faculty of Law in Ljubljana, Slovenia and is a leading scholar on the subject of psychoanalysis and law. She has a long association with the critical legal studies movement, and her connection with the Law School was consolidated recently when she was commissioned to develop and run a course exploring the psychoanalytical and emotional dimensions of the lawyer-client relation and, more generally, the psycho-social dimensions of legal practice as a core course on the School's newly established LLM in Critical Legal Practice.

She is also on the steering committee for Law on Trial - a week of annual public lectures, workshops and media events hosted by the School and aimed at interrogating an aspect of law. Between 28 June and 2 July 2010, the aspect of law will be social rights.

Professor Salecl’s visit to the School will help in its aim to establish itself as a leading centre for the study of the emotional and psychological dimensions of the practice of law and will further consolidate existing work in the field of law and psychoanalysis.

Professor Salecl is author of On Anxiety (2004) and Choice published in 2010. Professor Salecl has also just been awarded the title Slovenian Woman Scientist of the Year. The award was issued by the Slovenian Ministry of Science on 21 October 2010.
