    Biography

    Şefki was appointed Lecturer in Law in 2026, prior to working as an Associate Lecturer in Contract and Advocacy, and as a Teaching Fellow at SOAS in Criminal and Tort Law. 

    Şefki holds LLM degrees in Public International Law from the University of Nottingham and International and Constitutional Law from University College London. He was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2023. 

    Alongside his academic work, Şefki has held research and policy roles across legal practice, civil society and higher education, and is currently a Constitution Society Fellow researching protest and the British constitution. Previously, he was a Senior Fellow and Rapporteur at JUSTICE, where he led major reform reports on the EU Settlement Scheme and the Afghan Resettlement Schemes; a Senior Legal Researcher at the University of Glasgow, where he co-authored a report on Scottish Gypsy/Traveller rights; and Principal Researcher at ABColombia, where he produced briefings on international investment law, treaty withdrawal and corporate accountability.

    Alongside his academic and policy work, Şefki has held legal and research positions with Friends of the Earth, the International Bar Association Human Rights Institute, Eversheds Sutherland and Peters & Peters, and has undertaken extensive pro bono work through the Free Representation Unit, Toynbee Hall and Lawyers in the Soup Kitchen.

    Research overview

    Şefki Bayram’s research sits in the broader fields of public international law, international environmental law and public and constitutional law. His work examines how legal institutions respond to complex harms that cross conventional boundaries between jurisdictions, fields of law and public and private responsibility.

    His doctoral research at the University of Sussex examines how international adjudicative bodies respond to atmospheric pollution, corporate conduct and transboundary environmental harm. Drawing upon international environmental, investment and commercial law, the project considers how judicial and arbitral bodies determine responsibility and how their reasoning contributes to the development of the international legal order.

    Şefki’s work draws upon legal positivism, interpretivism, global legal pluralism, transnational legal theory and non-ideal theory. He is particularly interested in how legal theory and methodology can be used to explain and develop legal responses to climate change and other collective harms, including the accountability of private actors operating across national jurisdictions.

    A second strand of Şefki’s research concerns public and constitutional law, civil liberties and the rule of law. As a 2026 Research Fellow at the Constitution Society, his current research examines the constitutional status of protest in the United Kingdom. It considers the relationship between protest, democracy and the rule of law, and traces the historical development of the common-law, human-rights and statutory frameworks governing protest.

    His wider applied research has addressed asylum and migration, minority rights, access to justice, international investment law, extradition and surveillance. He has conducted this work through roles at JUSTICE, the University of Glasgow, ABColombia, Friends of the Earth and the International Bar Association Human Rights Institute.
