Sexual Harms and Medical Encounters (SHaME)
Sexual Harms and Medical Encounters (SHaME) is a research group exploring the role of medicine and psychiatry in sexual violence. Funded by a Wellcome Trust grant, SHaME is led by Professor Joanna Bourke and comprised of an interdisciplinary research team working across disciplines in the humanities and social sciences.
Sexual violence is one of the most serious problems in the contemporary world. Our interdisciplinary research group seeks to understand the role played by medical professionals, including psychiatrists, in understanding and dealing with sexual harms. Instead of shame, we advocate for empowerment and knowledge.
In addition to academic outputs, SHaME runs a comprehensive programme of academic and public events, in order to explore and critically engage with wider debates surrounding this global health crisis.
If you would like to be updated about our events programme, please sign up to our mailing list below. We will send you no more than one email a month outlining public and academic events and new resources, as well as a termly newsletter summarising our activities.
