Welcome to the Birkbeck Graduate Research School

Birkbeck is a world-class, research-led institution, a vibrant centre of academic excellence which allows people to study part-time whilst fulfilling other commitments. Birkbeck hosts a community of over 700 research students.

Birkbeck is one of the top 250 universities in the world rankings, and half of our research was in the top 20 in the UK in the most recent REF exercise (the UK Government's periodic audit of research quality). Our postgraduate researchers play a vital role in our success.

In your time with us as a postgraduate rsearch student you will be supported by the Graduate Research School and the Research Student Unit in the Registry.

In the Graduate Research School, our aims are:

  • To provide a supportive, vibrant environment for the intellectual interests of our postgraduate research students
  • To support our postgraduate researchers to achieve their ambitions
  • To support the development of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research ideas
  • To support the ongoing professional development of our postgraduate research students
  • To promote good practice in research supervision
  • To work with the International Office and International Student Administration to support the specific needs of our international postgraduate research students

The Research Student Unit (RSU) is responsible for:

  • The maintenance of student records for research students across the College
  • Overseeing the examination and awarding process of all research students
  • Answering queries from research students, their supervisors, administrators and examiners to ensure that the examination process runs as smoothly as possible
  • The administration of certain research studentships and scholarships
  • Providing input on how current processes and regulations relating to research students can be improved
