Dean's welcome

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the School of Law at Birkbeck, University of London, located in Bloomsbury in the heart of central London. The School of Law is home to the Department of Law, the Department of Criminology, and the Institute of Criminal Policy Research. Our established scholars, expert practitioners and advanced researchers look forward to instructing you in a range of dynamic courses in law and criminology.

Founded in 1992 with the dual aim of setting high academic standards and making higher education accessible to working people, the School of Law has kept true to its mission while adapting to the changing times. The school’s research has gained an international reputation for its high quality, critical perspectives and interdisciplinary approaches. The School of Law has expanded to encompass a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, certificate courses, a new law conversion course, and a flourishing doctoral programme. We remain committed to providing students with a high degree of flexibility in their studies.

Classes are held on Birkbeck’s campus, located on Torrington Square, as well as in our new state-of-the-art building at 373 Euston Road. We host regular career-related events, research events and public conferences, such as our annual Law on Trial Conference. The school also houses the Centre for Research on Race and Law, the Centre for the Critical Study of European Law and the Centre for Law and the Humanities.

The School of Law marks its 30th anniversary this year, and we look forward to celebrating this milestone with a range of dynamic events. We look forward to meeting you soon.
