Funded conferences

The Birkbeck Institute for Social Research aims to extend and enhance methodological expertise and innovation in social research through interdisciplinary contribution. As part of this mission, the BISR ringfences part of its annual budget to support small conferences organised by academics and researchers within the College.

Applications are now open for conferences organised by members of academic staff from all five schools during the autumn term of academic year 2022-23.

BISR support events that highlight the interdisciplinary, publicly engaged, and methodologically innovative social research taking place at Birkbeck. In particular, BISR will be looking to support events that focus on Knowledge Exchange (KE), which brings together researchers, academic staff, external groups, and communities to increase the impact of research through engagement.

GUIDELINES

The BISR actively promotes an interdisciplinary approach to research. Preference will be given to applications whose organisational team and methods reflect this; it is strongly recommended that you have at least two organisers from two different departments.

Each year the committee will set a maximum amount to be given to successful conference proposals. This will be determined by the annual budget.

The BISR conference funding can be used for speaker fees, travel and/or accommodation expenses as well as other general conference expenses as detailed in the conference pack. Some catering costs will be considered.

The organiser of the conference is responsible for passing on the required details to the BISR office for the organisation, budgeting and advertising of the conference. A schedule for this will be set in place upon award of funding.
