Plantations Working Group

Plantations have shaped, and continue to shape, ecologies and societies. From erasure of Indigenous ecologies to exploitation of slave and bonded labour, the plantation may be considered a logic, form and structure through which inequalities are realised. The continued development of plantations gives rise to significant ecological impacts including the loss of biodiversity, and greenhouse gas emissions. Attention is therefore needed to understand the plantation and imagine possibilities for sustainability and justice.

This working group aims to:

  • Provide space for an interdisciplinary group of researchers, organisations and frontline communities to better understand the ways in which plantations have shaped and continue to shape society and ecologies, and to bring together learning from different geographical contexts.
  • Explore ways of working together to develop future research funding proposals related to the plantation, to examine possibilities for just and sustainable futures.
  • Engage with the public on the role and effects of the plantation through film, art and debate.
