"Studying at Birkbeck transformed my confidence and career prospects"

Nada Mohamed, an MSc Marketing Analytics student from Iraq, shares her journey to Birkbeck, from building a career in digital marketing across Iraq and Türkiye to settling in London. She reflects on adapting to a new city, growing in confidence through her studies and making the most of opportunities both on and off campus.

Life before Birkbeck

Before starting my MSc in Marketing Analytics at Birkbeck, I worked for several years in digital marketing and influencer marketing across Iraq and Türkiye. Most recently, I worked as an International Influencer Marketing Specialist at Trendyol, where I managed creator campaigns using data-driven insights. Before that, I completed a Master’s degree in Computer Engineering with a focus on Artificial Intelligence in Istanbul, which sparked my interest in combining technology with marketing analytics.

Choosing Birkbeck

I first heard about Birkbeck while researching UK universities through my Chevening Scholarship journey. I chose Birkbeck because of its strong focus on practical learning, its reputation in business and marketing, and its central London location. The opportunity to study in one of the world’s most diverse cities while learning from academics with industry expertise made it the perfect choice for me.

Adjusting to living in London

Moving to London was exciting, but it was also a big adjustment. Although it wasn’t my first time travelling internationally, it was my first time living in London. Finding accommodation took some patience, but with the help of the university, I was able to find a place to settle. Once I was living near central London, I quickly appreciated how well connected the city is.

One of my favourite things about London is its public transport. The Underground and buses make it easy to explore different neighbourhoods, museums, parks, and cafés. The cost of living is definitely one of the biggest challenges, but I’ve learned how to budget while still enjoying everything the city has to offer. I also love how multicultural London feels, you hear different languages every day, and it’s easy to feel part of an international community.

Studying has increased my confidence

Starting my course was both exciting and challenging. The British education system places a strong emphasis on independent learning, critical thinking, and academic writing, which felt different from my previous studies. Over time, I noticed a real change in my confidence. I became more comfortable sharing my ideas in class discussions, conducting independent research and tackling complex projects. These are skills that will continue to benefit me throughout my career.

My favourite part of the programme has been applying analytics to real marketing problems. Working on my dissertation, which explored AI-driven analysis of promotional effectiveness in e-commerce, allowed me to combine my technical background with my passion for marketing.

Securing a work placement with the Careers Service

One of the most valuable aspects of my experience was the support available through the Birkbeck Careers and Enterprise Service. With guidance from the team, I secured a work placement that enabled me to apply my learning in a professional environment. The study support sessions were also very helpful, especially when adapting to UK academic expectations.

Making friends from around the world

I’ve made friends from many different countries through my course, which has been one of the most rewarding parts of studying at Birkbeck. I also became involved with the university as a Student Ambassador and later worked as a Telephone Fundraiser, both of which helped me meet more students and develop valuable professional experience alongside my studies.

Some of my highlights included walking through Bloomsbury after evening classes, visiting the British Museum, exploring different parts of London, completing my dissertation, and representing Birkbeck through student ambassador activities. These moments made London feel like home.

Take advantage of every opportunity

My advice to future students is to make the most of every opportunity available to you. Attend events, build connections, seek support when you need it and explore everything London has to offer. My time at Birkbeck has given me much more than a qualification. It has helped me develop new skills, build lifelong friendships and grow in confidence both personally and professionally.
