Spotlight on sustainable working life and well-being at Birkbeck’s Business Week

Business challenges, including the legacy of the recession, will be addressed during public lectures

Business challenges, including the legacy of the recession, will be addressed during public lectures at Birkbeck. High-profile speakers from academia and industry will discuss workplace dilemmas, employee engagement and explore new business models during Business Week at Birkbeck from 24-27 June.

The new Centre for Sustainable Working Life at Birkbeck will also be launched as part of the annual series of free events. Research at the Centre will focus on health and safety at work, cancer survival and working life, retail culture and pharmaco-safety.

Keynote presentations include:

  • Willie Walsh, Chief Executive of the International Airlines Group: Business in a changing world
  • Ken Olisa OBE, Chairman and Founder of Restoration Partners: Rich or right? The technologist’s dilemma
  • David MacLeod, Government Advisor: Engage for success: putting people at the heart of our approach
  • Geoff Mulgan, Chief Executive of NESTA: How can we make the economy more innovative and creative – and reduce the risks of monopoly, predation and harm?

Birkbeck’s research and teaching

Birkbeck academics, including Professor Tom Cox CBE, Professor Ron Smith and Professor John Driffill, will talk about their latest research on sustainable working life, happiness and the link with economic growth.

Entrepreneurs, business people, prospective students and Birkbeck alumni are welcome to attend the talks organised by Birkbeck’s School of Business, Economics and Informatics (BEI). There will also be a number of stands which link to our theme of sustainable working life and well-being and you will have the opportunity to chat to practitioners.

Professor Philip Powell, Executive Dean of the School of BEI, said: “Business Week is an exciting opportunity to find out about the challenges facing the economy and possible solutions. Workplace change is probably the only element of working life that can be guaranteed at present, but with constant change comes the need to increase engagement and resilience. All are welcome to attend and the events offer a great opportunity for networking with the business community too.”
