Professor Lynda Nead, Pevsner Professor of History of Art at Birkbeck, has been appointed as a Trustee of the Victoria & Albert Museum by Prime Minister Theresa May.

Taking up her appointment on 1st January 2017, Professor Nead's research intersects closely with the work of the museum. She has published widely on the history of British art, including books on Victorian London, the relationship of art and early film and, most recently, art and culture in post-war Britain.

Professor Nead has continuing interests in the histories of design, dress, photography and film and was a founding director of the Photography Research Centre at Birkbeck. She has served on Advisory Boards at the Museum of London, Tate, the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art and the Foundling Museum and has been a member of the Leverhulme Trust Research Awards Advisory Council. She is currently also a member of English Heritage Blue Plaques Panel and an elected member of the Academia Europaea.

Along with Professor Nead, three other Trustees have also been appointed beginning in the New Year. They include Benjamin Elliot, the Co-Founder of Quintessentially, the global luxury lifestyle company; Steven Murphy founder of Murphy and Partners and previously CEO of Christie's; and Nigel Webb, Chartered Surveyor and Head of Development and a member of the Group Executive Committee at The British Land Company Plc.

Speaking about her appointment, Professor Nead said:

“It is a great honour to be asked to join the Trustees of the V&A – an institution with a worldwide reputation as a centre for collections related to art and design. This subject has fascinated me for many years and has been the subject of my research throughout my career. Through my appointment, I look forward to preserving the contribution the V&A makes to the cultural life of the country.”

Professor David Latchman CBE, Master of Birkbeck, added:

“This is superb news for Professor Nead and testament to the calibre of her research and her part in forging the reputation of Birkbeck's School of Arts. We wish her well as she takes up this new role in addition to her position at the College.”
