Four Birkbeck students have made it to the semi-finals of the Mayor’s Entrepreneur Competition.

The annual competition aims to support innovation in the capital by challenging students in Greater London to create a sustainable new business idea.

The College is represented by entrepreneurial students across the four competition categories: Creative Industries; Environment; Health; and Smart Cities. Birkbeck’s semi-finalists are:

Founder of Anywhere Bear, a travel site to help people plan flight-free holidays around Europe.

Founder of Smart Therapy Tools, an app designed to modernise Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) delivery for therapists and service users.

Founder of Sonaaar, a platform for connecting Black communities around the world.

Founder of TerraBite, a mobile app that tells users the environmental footprint of food products.

A delighted Evgenia said: “Our team is exhilarated to have made it to the semi-finals of the Mayor's Entrepreneur! More than a competition, the Mayor's Entrepreneur is an inspiration: it's humbling to fight the climate crisis and the destruction of natural habitats side by side with other passionate entrepreneurs.”

Fellow contestant Ethel said: “It feels incredible to have the Mayor’s Entrepreneur Competition buy into the work that we at Sonaaar are doing to alter the narrative of Black experiences.”

Lucy Robinson, Employability Consultant at Birkbeck, said: “We’re thrilled to see four Birkbeck students in the Mayor’s Entrepreneur semi-final. The standard of student entrepreneurship and innovation at Birkbeck has always been particularly high, and every year we’re delighted to see our students and graduates contributing creative, sustainable and timely solutions to the start-up arena. We can’t wait to see where our semi-finalists take their business ideas.”

To get to the final, the semi-finalists are now honing their pitching skills in order to deliver a two-minute video pitch for their business. The winners will pitch their ideas to a celebrity panel in Autumn and from the finalists four Mayor’s Entrepreneurs will be chosen for 2020.
