Refreshers Fair - January Orientation

Refreshers Event - Saturday 14th January 2023

The Refreshers Event will include the Students' Unions 'Welcome Back Fair' which is a great way to start the new year. The event is open to all students. Students starting in January are particularly encouraged to attend, but the sessions will be useful for all Birkbeck students at the start of the Spring term. All events take place at the main Birkbeck building. 

There will be a number of stalls in room 111a in the Library, running between 10:00-14.00 including:

  • Study skills/Studiosity  
  • Digital Education
  • Access and Engagement Mentoring 
  • Accommodation 
  • Students Union

The Fair will include study skills sessions, Students' Union, Library tours. The day will close with a fantastic session on the 200th anniversary of Birkbeck.

Sessions on Saturday 14th January: 

14:00 - 15:00: ‘200 years of radical learning for working people’ 

Birkbeck History Professor, Joanna Bourke, FBA will share some of her favourite stories from and talk about her new book, ‘Birkbeck – 200 Years of Radical Learning for Working People’.

Saturday Study Skills Day

Come onto campus for a Saturday Study Skills Day which will give you a great chance to boost your study skills ahead of the start of year, with a broad range of study skills workshops available to book.

Library Tours 

Make the most out of the library resources by attending an introductory session to explain what library services are available to you as a student and how to use them. Library tours will run at 10.30, 11.30, 12:30 and 13:30.

IT Support 

Having trouble connecting to Birkbeck wifi or other IT difficulties? IT help is available in the Student Centre, 10.00 – 15.00.

Disability Service 

Head to workstation room 414 on the fourth floor of the Malet Street building for support on completing your Disabled Students’ Allowance grant application, and to take a free dyslexia screening’ Drop in between 10:00 and 13:30. 

Appointments with the Disability Service Manager, Mark Pimm, are available on a first-come-first-served basis, in Room G12 on the ground floor of the Malet Street building, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. For general queries and to arrange an appointment, please email the Disability and Dyslexia Service team or call +44 (0) 20 3907 0700.

Wellbeing

Wellbeing are hosting a workshop designed to help you understand ways of maintaining health and well-being at university, 12:30-1.30pm, on campus, Malet Street, Room 252.

Accommodation advice service

Get some advice from the private accommodation advice service of the University of London who will be joining us from 10 am to 1pm as well as delivering a presentation followed by a Q.A, from 11 am – 12pm.

Refreshments

The Birkbeck bar will be open following Joanna Bourke's session, at 3pm. 

The Perch Cafe (Ground floor at the main Birkbeck building) will be open to purchase snacks and drinks.

Student Union Events

The Students' Union will be hosting a series of events aimed at welcoming our new and returning students back to campus!

Campus tours – Thursday 12th and 19th January

Join a campus tour to find out more about Birkbeck. The tours are led by our experienced current students and are a great way to ask questions about student life.

Postgraduate-focussed study skills workshops - Saturday 7th January

There will be two online events on 7 January 2023 which are a great way to get ready for the start of term. Come along to hear tips on essay and assignment writing for postgraduates, followed by an essay and assignment writing using apps and software.
