Birkbeck enters its 200th anniversary celebration!

The event is open to all students. The event will run on from the January Orientation 2022 event.

Birkbeck History Professor, Joanna Bourke, FBA will share some of her favourite stories from and talk about her new book, ‘Birkbeck – 200 Years of Radical Learning for Working People’.

Published in time for Birkbeck’s 200th anniversary in 2023, Bourke's book tells the story of the College, from its founding in 1823, when half of women and a third of men were unable to read or write, through to the present day.

More than just a history of how Birkbeck has contributed to shaping modern British higher education, ‘200 Years of Radical Learning for Working People’ is also a history of life and culture in London over the past two centuries, exploring questions such as "what does it mean to be educated?," "why have Birkbeck's students been prepared to give up so much to study for a higher degree?," and "how can education help us become self-fulfilled and better people?"

The Library has a few hard copies of the book, and as an ebook on the Library catalogue.
