Start to Teach 2024 (session 1)

We are delighted to offer a new start to teach course for all Birkbeck PhD students new to teaching and/or demonstrating at Birkbeck. This is suitable for PhD students with no previous experience of teaching or assisting teaching or those who are keen to refresh their knowledge and skills as part of a supportive cohort.

The course will provide you with the opportunity to join a cross-college network of your peers, with whom you can discuss your classroom challenges and achievements, and work together to identify and share good practice in learning and teaching approaches.

Session 1: An introduction to blended learning (Friday 2 February)
•     Discuss how to create a safe and collaborative environment for learning.
•     Understand core theoretical foundations of teaching practice
•     Understand the typical roles of teacher, teaching assistant or demonstrator.
•     Explore the skills and knowledge needed for effective teaching.
•     Explore the impact of tutor behaviour and organisational skills on student engagement.
•     Identify effective classroom practice and management.

The course comprises three in-person afternoon sessions from 12pm – 4pm with the other sessions on Friday 16 February and Friday 8 March. Lunch will be provided. Please note: Participants will expected to attend every session.

An online follow-up session will be offered on 22 March between 2-4pm so that the group can get to together to reflect on their progress.
