Digital Media Management Industry Advisory Panel

The Industry Advisory Panel of the MA Digital Media Management is an initiative aimed at fostering closer collaboration between the academic and professional spheres of the communication field.

The panel comprises a selected team of managers, entrepreneurs, alumni and academics with extensive professional experience and international expertise in the industry of media and communication.

The members of the panel share a commitment to improving the quality of the MA programme and providing our students with up-to-date professional skills and competences that are essential for a present and future career in digital media management.

Pedro Caiado, Digital Content Strategist at UK Government

  • Currently, Pedro is Senior Digital Content Manager at the Department of Education and oversees the content strategy, website content, and video implementation for the Policy Profession, which is a cross-government unit. He previously worked in digital video production at CNN as a writer and news producer, responsible for pitching news stories, features and other content to give CNN a distinctive voice and a competitive edge. Pedro has also been an editor, reporter, and field and output producer for Thomson Reuters in both the broadcast and agency units. His passion is creating news stories and digital products from scratch, and telling stories to level up digital brands. Pedro is an alumnus of our programme in Digital Media Management.

Tausha Cowan, Vice President, Knowledge Strategy and Integration at American Express Travel

  • Tausha is an award-winning communications leader who currently serves as Vice President of Knowledge Strategy & Integration at American Express Travel. In her role, she oversees internal communications, knowledge management, learning design and business integration for the Travel & Lifestyle Services division at American Express. Before American Express, Tausha oversaw internal marketing and communications at Columbia University's Business School where she led the internal rollout of the school's new brand positioning. Tausha began her career in the media industry at NBCUniversal doing executive and internal communications in the Corporate Communications department. She holds a BA in Journalism and Mass Communications from New York University and a MSc in Media, Communication and Development from the London School of Economics.

Clement Gavrila, Head of Digital Transformation at Virgin Media O2

  • Clement is part of the leadership team in charge of the digital transformation and integration of the joint venture of Virgin Media and O2 Telefonica, known as VMO2. His role is at the intersection of integrating people, processes, data and technology, and developing new digital capabilities to raise VMO2 to the next level. Clement is a creative and analytical professional with a background in business improvement, transformation and commercial strategy with a love for mathematics and analytics. He also worked as a consultant at Alvarez & Marsal on large transformation projects for large media, retail and fast-moving consumer goods businesses. Before consulting, Clement worked on the commercial strategy and internal transformation of Eurosport and Discovery networks, combining storytelling, commercial acumen and analytics. His extensive experience also includes corporate finance. Clement is a Birkbeck alumnus.

Christi Kobierecka, Senior Insights Manager - PDC Homecare at Unilever

  • Christi is a data-driven Research and Insight/Marketing Manager with a proven track record of delivering exceptional research projects for both clients and internal stakeholders. Her interest is managing research projects from concept to completion, ensuring projects are executed to the highest standards, delivered on time and within budget. Christi has a wealth of experience in bringing research projects to life through creative storytelling methods for media agencies, specialists, clients as well as media analysts and trade bodies. She is an alumna of our programme in Digital Media Management.

Karlijn Marchildon, Head of Brand at VanMoof

  • In start-up circles, Karlijn’s is one of the most influential names in brand marketing. She has led a number of campaigns for VanMoof, the world’s fastest growing and most funded e-bike start-up. She has contributed to the company’s success, bringing the e-bike brand from Amsterdam to a global stage, and continues to shape headlines in notable publications such as The Guardian, The New York Times, VOGUE and the cover of TIME magazine. In similar fashion, Karlijn and her team also made headlines for their first TV commercial, which was banned in France because it created a "climate of fear" about cars. Of course, the ban caused even more visibility and press coverage for the brand across countries. Karlijn’s strength is giving wings to great ideas in a way that resonates with real people. Her interests cover urban sustainability, digital media, branding, and the internet of things.

Natalie MEyer, Founder and CEO of Tokyoesque

  • With diverse experience rooted in Tokyo, London, Amsterdam and Silicon Valley, Natalie founded and heads up Tokyoesque. Founded in 2013, Tokyoesque is a market expansion agency providing market research, export support and localisation services into and out of Japan. Her mission is to connect people, businesses and cultures to boost globalisation.
  • Natalie is a Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Programme Alum and #ialso Top 100 Entrepreneurs, in addition to an Entrepreneur's Champion Finalist (NatWest Great British Entrepreneur Awards) and Young Entrepreneur of Finalist (Amazon Growing Business Awards).

She holds a BA in Linguistics from Georgetown University and a MSc in Global Media and Communication from the London School of Economics.

Emily Nix, Digital Marketing Manager at Citizens Advice

  • Emily is an experienced marketing professional with a long history of working in the non-profit and charity sector. She is an expert in digital marketing, paid advertising and social media. Emily and her team promote Citizen Advice services aimed at providing free, confidential, impartial advice on benefits, debt, housing, employment, consumer issues and immigration amongst others. Citizens Advice supports millions of people each year across England and Wales equipping them with the tools to find a way forward, whoever they are and whatever their problem. Outside of work, Emily's interests include theatre, traveling and women's sport.

Valentina Papa, Global Marketing Manager at Dolce & Gabbana

  • Valentina brings international experience and broad expertise to marketing. She worked for Unilever in their Rotterdam headquarters, managing global and local brands such as Dove, Sunsilk, Hellmann's and Rexona, amongst others. Currently, she is the Global Marketing Manager of Dolce & Gabbana for the Beauty Division, focusing on fine fragrances. Aside from her marketing expertise, she brings with her a passion for writing, with four novels currently published and a master's in international storytelling.

Atique Waghani, Social Media - Platform Experience Associate at Accenture

  • Atique spent the first 10 years of his career in accountancy and finance where he had the opportunity to gain insight into client businesses from various industries. He is inspired most when providing leadership and taking ownership of key projects. He developed a keen interest in the London tech scene and founded a startup, also working as a consultant to other local startups and small businesses. Currently, he is a social media analyst at Accenture in Dublin. Atique is interested in combining outstanding people skills with commercial acumen, marketing and branding abilities to develop innovative and creative solutions to problems. Atique is a Birkbeck alumni and holds an MSc in Marketing.

Dr. Marco Scalvini, Programme Director, MA Digital Media Management at Birkbeck, University of London

  • Marco is a Lecturer in the Department of Film, Media and Cultural Studies, and Program Director of the Master and PGCert in Digital Media Management at Birkbeck and University of London respectively.
  • His key interest lies in designing courses and developing independent research strategies for the investigation of digital media industries with an emphasis on the ethical and moral conflicts that creatives and content producers may encounter in practice. Specifically, he focuses on the collaboration and divergences between the tech industry and traditional media, paying particular attention to how this exchange is reshaping the digital media industries and the production of media content. These tensions have implications for creators, producers and audiences.
  • In addition to his career in academia, he worked as a professional in the advertising and marketing communications industry, and as digital media consultant for international organisations including UNESCO, UN and G8. Prior to joining Birkbeck, Marco has held academic posts at Erasmus University Rotterdam, London School of Economics and New York University.

Dr. Sven-ove HoRST, Senior Assistant Professor in Media & Creative Industries at Erasmus University Rotterdam

  • Sven is passionate about creative innovation strategies, media entrepreneurship and finance. His research addresses the merging of media management and organisation theory. Specifically, he studies the processes and practices of strategy, entrepreneurship and change in today's media organisations, and society more broadly. Sven’s research also observes how blockchain technology can serve consumers more directly and personally by leveraging the power of web3, NFTs and cryptocurrency transactions. He teaches courses on applied qualitative research and collaborates with practitioners to develop and reflect on leadership skills and behaviours for today's networked organisations. Sven is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Media Business Studies.

Dr. Thorsten Philipp, Scientific Advisor for Transdisciplinary Didactics at Technische Universität Berlin

  • Thorsten is a political scientist and Romance scholar. As a member of the president’s staff at TU Berlin, his mission is to promote transdisciplinary learning at the interface between university and society by promoting participative learning projects in cooperation with representatives from business, politics, culture and civil society. Thorsten teaches sustainability theories and political communication at the universities of Lüneburg, Freiburg and Passau. In his research, he explores pop music as a resonance chamber of environmental conflicts.
