Overview

  • Credit value: 30 credits at Level 7
  • Convenor: Michael Garnett
  • Assessment: seminar participation (40%) and a 10-minute seminar presentation on some aspect of the set seminar reading, including a written version of up to 1500 words (60%)

Module description

The aim of this module is to train you in the close reading of philosophical texts and how to participate in philosophical discussion within a group. It consists of 10 intensive, two-hour seminars, each focused on a set reading.

The idea is to strengthen your ability to present ideas and materials orally and in written form.

Topics vary from year to year.

Learning objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • debate various interpretations of philosophical texts by drawing on textual analysis and arguments
  • apply relevant philosophical concepts and distinctions
  • speak coherently and at length on philosophical topics
  • assess the strengths and weaknesses of a philosopher's views
  • express your thoughts clearly
  • construct, analyse and criticise arguments
  • summarise ideas for presentations in written form
  • use library and internet resources for self-directed research
  • communicate complex ideas and opinions orally
  • listen and respond effectively to others
  • lead a discussion
  • engage in constructive cooperative discussions with peers.
