History of Birkbeck

Birkbeck has been helping people access higher education and transform their lives for 200 years. We have an illustrious, unconventional and radical history of which we are very proud.

Our story

Birkbeck was founded as the London Mechanics’ Institute in 1823 by George Birkbeck, after he delivered an inspiring speech at the Crown and Anchor Tavern.
