We excel in research that has a high impact on policy and practice in the real world. In the 2014 REF, Psychological Sciences at Birkbeck was ranked in the top five research departments in the UK. Our teaching team includes world-leading scientists who specialise in child development, education, neuroscience and cognition.

In the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings Psychology was eighth out of only 13 UK institutions to make the top 100 and was ranked 68th in the world. Birkbeck was among the top two institutions in London at which to study psychology. In the National Student Survey 2018, Psychology at Birkbeck was named the best in London for overall satisfaction (and seventh in England). Moreover, part-time students gave us a 100% satisfaction rating.

Dr Sarah Lloyd-Fox will receive the Wiley Prize in Psychology from the British Academy in recognition of her distinction in research into infant cognitive development.

Professor Ulrike Hahn wins prize for research into political accuracy and social media

Professor Hahn won the Computational Modeling Prize in Applied Cognition for a paper which examined how the accuracy of political information is affected as it is shared through social media networks.

Babies' response to 'peek-a-boo' could hold clue to autism

New research from Birkbeck, exploring the levels of brain activity of babies in response to social stimuli such as peek-a-boo and the sound of laughter, could show the earliest marker of autism to date.
