Get Started

Get Started is a series of free workshops for prospective students from all ages, backgrounds and subject areas, who are interested in starting an undergraduate course at Birkbeck.

The Get Started programme consists of three workshops and prospective students can attend all three or just select the one(s) which are most relevant to them. All three workshops are free and open to all undergraduate applicants, providing a friendly and interactive space to ask questions and get all the information needed to feel confident applying to study.

Prospective students who have attended any of the Get Started events may also receive an exclusive invitation to attend events delivered by the Birkbeck Careers and Employability team to help them develop their employability skills.

Workshop 1: Preparing to study and making an application

  • The workshop is open to those who have a course in mind already or those who are making the first tentative steps, and will provide attendees with useful and practical information to help them to take the next step towards making an application to undergraduate study.
  • You will have the opportunity to:
    • talk about the benefits of Higher Education
    • find out about practical solutions and available support to overcome challenges
    • reflect on your own personal motivations for studying your chosen course
    • learn how to navigate and complete the online application form
    • meet a student ambassador and find out more about studying at Birkbeck.

Workshop 2: Writing a personal statement

  • Writing a personal statement can be daunting. If you know which undergraduate course you would like to apply for, this workshop will give you the help and support to write your personal statement.
  • You will have the opportunity to:
    • reflect on your personal motivations and life experience and how these can be used in your personal statement
    • learn about how to get feedback on your personal statement using Birkbeck's Personal Statement Tool
    • meet a student ambassador and find out more about studying at Birkbeck
    • start drafting your personal statement.

Workshop 3: Student finance

  • Money can be a concern for many prospective students, but it shouldn’t have to be a barrier as there is a lot of financial support available. Student finance can seem complicated so this free and informal workshop, delivered by Birkbeck’s Student Advice Service, will help you to understand the process.
  • The workshop is open to those who are applying for an undergraduate course, and are looking for help and guidance on student finance.
  • The workshop will include:
    • an introduction to student loans and financial support available from the government, and how to apply for them
    • an outline of Birkbeck’s bursary packages, available for students who are most in need
    • an overview of the student loans repayment process, including when repayment commences, interest applied and typical proportions of repayment.
