Teaching and attendance

What format do classes take?

Our MSc/MRes courses are taught by a combination of lectures by academic staff.

Classes typically begin with a lecture of about 60 minutes in length for the week's topic of study.

The second hour takes the form of a seminar. This is typically a student presentation, where one or two students make a 10-15 minute presentation each, identifying the main issues for discussion by the class.

What are the attendance requirements?

For all of our MSc/MRes degrees formal teaching takes place between 18.00 and 20.00, with each course unit meeting one evening per week.

  • Part-time students attend classes on two nights a week in the first year and on one or two nights a week in the second.
  • Full-time students attend three or four nights a week throughout the year.

Reading week and workshop week takes place halfway through each semester. The 2016/17 calendar is as follows for postgraduate students:
