Teaching and attendance

What format do classes take?

Our MSc/MRes courses are taught by a combination of lectures by academic staff.

Classes typically begin with a lecture of about 60 minutes in length for the week's topic of study.

The second hour takes the form of a seminar. This is typically a student presentation, where one or two students make a 10-15 minute presentation each, identifying the main issues for discussion by the class.

What are the attendance requirements?

For all of our MSc/MRes degrees, formal teaching takes place between 18.00 and 20.00.

  • Part-time students attend classes on two nights per week in each year.
  • Full-time students attend four nights a week throughout the year.

Students are expected to spend similar number of hours outside of class, per module per week. For example, a module that has 2 hours of teaching which will require 2 hours of prior reading.

Reading week and Workshop week takes place halfway through each semester. The 2018/19 calendar is as follows for postgraduate students:
