#OurBirkbeck launches to showcase incredible impact of the Birkbeck community

The exciting new initiative will celebrate and showcase the impact that members of the Birkbeck community are having around the world, and we encourage you to share your story with us.

This year’s Foundation Day celebrations marked 197 years since the College’s foundation in 1823 and also launched #OurBirkbeck: an initiative to share, showcase and celebrate the impact alumni, students, staff and friends are having around the world and how Birkbeck has played a part.

Professor Latchman commented: “This year has been unlike any other; over our nearly 200-year history, the strength and diversity of our Birkbeck community have never been so apparent. As we look towards our future and celebrating our 200th anniversary in 2023, I am proud to announce the launch of #OurBirkbeck. I continue to be in awe of the dedication, ambition and impact of our Birkbeck students, staff, alumni and friends, so many of whom continue to strive to succeed and achieve incredible things, despite the obstacles they have encountered. If you are making a difference in your community, bringing about change to your industry or shaping the lives of those around you, we want to hear from you.”

The Foundation Day celebrations took place on Wednesday 2 December virtually due to the pandemic, with Birkbeck supporters hearing from Professor Wendy Thomson CBE, Vice-Chancellor of the University of London and Professor David Latchman, Vice-Chancellor of Birkbeck, as they discussed Birkbeck’s unique history and its role within the University of London.

Professor Thomson said at the event: “The relationship between Birkbeck and the University of London has its origins in a really good match of values and commitment to access in education. Looking into our archives, which is a real treasure chest, we found lots of individual and collective stories that have made Birkbeck what it is – we even have the writings of the Birkbeck founder, George Birkbeck, himself!”

Nic Katona, Director of Development and Alumni, added: “This special event drew to a close a series of celebrations that took place this year to commemorate 100 years since Birkbeck joined the University of London and launched the fantastic new initiative, #OurBirkbeck. We are proud to champion the incredible ways in which our 60,000 alumni and friends are having an impact on their communities and industries around the world. We very much look forward to hearing your story.”
