Students on Birkbeck Malet Street campus as Birkbeck scores high for USS satisfaction.

Birkbeck has achieved the second highest score in London for teaching and third for overall satisfaction in newly released National Student Survey (NSS) figures.

The rankings also record a number of subjects and courses in which Birkbeck is flying high both in the capital and nationally, with maths achieving particularly strong scores – seventh in England for overall satisfaction and third in England for teaching, in addition to being number one in London for both.

Overall satisfaction with Birkbeck is in line with the national average at 83%, down slightly from 84% last year which is also the picture reflected more widely across the UK.

For students taking their first degree, Birkbeck was rated number one in London for the organisation and management of courses, and was positioned 12th UK-wide.

The College was rated highly for student satisfaction in many individual subjects. Psychology at Birkbeck has been named best in London for overall satisfaction (and seventh in England), along with History of Art. For accounting and English Studies, Birkbeck was placed third in London for overall satisfaction.

In terms of teaching, the College was ranked first in London for Maths and Journalism, second in London for accounting and media studies (which was also tenth in England), third in London for Economics and fourth in London for Law.

The College is continuing to act on the informative feedback it receives from the NSS to improve the student experience for those studying full-time or part-time at the UK’s only evening university. Work is ongoing to implement changes as a result of the comprehensive student review which was undertaken last year to explore and investigate the experience of taught students, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Professor Diane Houston, Birkbeck’s Pro Vice Master, Education, said: “The National Student Survey is the most trusted national source of student views on higher education institutions and its findings help to inform the Teaching Excellence Framework, so I am delighted that Birkbeck has performed so well across so many indicators. The results help to confirm that teaching at Birkbeck, University of London is among the best in the country.”

This year, 67% of final year undergraduate students at Birkbeck – a considerable rise from the 59% in 2017– completed the Survey, which draws opinions on eight key areas of student life.

Some subjects achieved a 100% overall satisfaction rating including Earth Sciences, Sociology, Psychology, Maths, Accounting and Media Studies for part-time students.
