The Department of Management in Birkbeck, University of London's School of Business, Economics and Informatics (BEI) has developed an innovative partnership with the School of International Business at China's Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE).

A delegation from the Chinese institution recently came to Birkbeck to sign a Memorandum of Understanding. The partnership will include collaboration at undergraduate, Master's and PhD levels.

The partnership is designed to promote comprehensive and sustainable development in western China, and allows for the delivery of Birkbeck's Master's/MPhil programmes to students at the School of International Business at SWUFE.

There will also be a visiting staff programme, with two staff members from Birkbeck's Department of Management already having visited China to collaborate on SWUFE programmes, and a further visit is planned for December 2012.

A dual degree has been agreed between the two Schools, enabling 15 students from SWUFE to come and study at Birkbeck's School of BEI for the second year of their Master's degree. During that time they will complete one of the Master's programmes in Birkbeck's Department of Management.

An undergraduate progression route has been established which will see up to 15 selected graduates for SWUFE's Bachelor's degree invited to progress onto a taught postgraduate programme in BEI at Birkbeck.

Professor Philip Powell, Executive Dean of BEI, and Dr Linda Trenberth, Head of the Department of Management said: 'We were delighted to welcome delegates from the School of International Business at SUWFE to Birkbeck in June. The exchange of ideas between the two Schools has been well received on both sides. We look forward to a long and productive collaboration with our Chinese colleagues.'
