Disability office

Located on the ground floor of the main building, the Disability Office’s primary role is to provide a high-quality service for all disabled applicants and students, thereby assisting them in achieving their full academic potential.

Our team

Our team will co-ordinate your support from your first enquiry, throughout your application, enrolment, on course and graduation:

  • The Disability Office is managed by the Disability Service Manager, Mark Pimm, who is your first point of contact for disability enquiries at the College.
  • Mark is assisted by the Disability Advisor, Steve Short, who is the first point of contact for dyslexia enquiries.
  • We also have a part-time disability mentor, Caroline Finill, who provides academically focused support for students with mental health needs.

How to get support: appointments and drop-in sessions

  1. You can book a one-hour appointment with the Disability Office by contacting the My Birkbeck helpdesk.
    • One-hour appointments are available at 12pm, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm (and in exceptional circumstances can be booked for 4pm or 5pm).
  2. You can attend the Disability Office drop-in from 4pm-6pm Monday to Friday. This particularly helps students who want to hand in documents, ask a few questions and get some quick advice.
  3. If you are studying at Birkbeck Stratford, you will be able to get disability support in Stratford.

Your first appointment

At your first appointment, we will:

  1. Ask you to complete a Confidentiality Consent Form. This allows you to state who in the College can be informed of your disability. Remember, if you wish, we do not need to inform people of the exact nature of your disability, just your disability related needs.
  2. Complete an Individual Student Support Agreement form with you, confirming your support requirements. We will send this to your School and relevant departments, so they are informed of your needs and can make reasonable adjustments for you.
  3. Assist you in completing your Disabled Students' Allowance application form.
